This world-wide movement has been guided mostlyby specific local niches rather than bylarge consortia, as typically observed ingenome projects. Such a model shares anunexpected similarity with the largenumber of artist workshops of the ItalianRenaissance. In fact, this deeply inno-vative period of Italian civilization wasdefinitely associated with master-pieces from household names (such asMichelangelo), but it was mainly a move-ment of humble and skilful artists whosework helped to reshape Europe. Followingthis model in proteomics research, localconferences represent a great opportu-nity to mine significant contributions ofproteome science achievements. Theseries of themed articles published in thisissue of Molecular BioSystems aims tocommunicate to the wider scientificcommunity the most complete andadvanced studies performed by ItalianProteomics scientists.While human proteomics investiga-tions initially led the research in thisarea, the most promising applicationsof proteomics are presently coming fromnon human investigations. The advance-ments in this field have produced the firstclinical proteomics tool (Biotypert),which is dedicated to the identificationof clinical microbial isolates. The workfrom Lorenza Putignani and coworkers(DOI:10.1039/C0MB00138D) demon-strates how MALDI-TOF-MS patternrecognition may represent an incrediblypowerful tool to obtain fast and accuratediagnosis of clinically relevant fungi,thus setting proteomics tools aspotentially life-saving devices. Thedevelopment of novel tools for multi-variate analysis is a key issue in thetechnological advancement of proteo-mics, the paper from the group ofEmilio Marengo’s group (DOI:10.1039/C0MB00124D) provides a state of the artclassification and ranking method for theidentification of tentative biomarkersbased on Principal Component Analysisand variable selection procedures. Suchmultivariate correlations are funda-mental in order to identify relationshipsbetween molecular data and specificenvironmental factors, as shown in thecharacterization of plasma proteincarbonylation in response to physicalexercise in athletes presented in thestudy from Francesca Guidi et al.(DOI:10.1039/C0MB00106F). The appli-cation of multivariate tools is also wellshown in the manuscript from LauraGiusti and colleagues (DOI:10.1039/C0MB00191K) in the investigation ofthe parathyroid gland proteome. Thisstudy indicates the potential applicationof multivariate modeling in the definitionof protein repertoires from adenoma andnormal tissues. The multiple phenotypiccorrelations of the induced adaptationin a genetic model of Salmonella entericais pursued in the manuscript fromDomenico Ciavardelli and colleagues(DOI:10.1039/C0MB00140F) proposinga state of the art ionomics investigationby multi-elemental ICP-MS analysiscoupled to parallelized quantitativeshotgun LC-MS/MS for peptideprofiling. This latest experimentalapproach has also been employed inconjunction with classical 2DE in theinvestigation of the platelet proteome ofpatients suffering the presence of anon-functional CFTR protein. The studyfrom Luisa Pieroni and collaborators(DOI:10.1039/C0MB00135J) demon-strates via the construction of afunctional relationships informaticsnetwork, a novel mechanism of plateletactivation in patients with cystic fibrosisbased on integrin signalling. A similardata-analysis approach was employed byGiovanni Nassa et al. (DOI:10.1039/C0MB00145G) in a comparative analysisof nuclear estrogen receptor alpha andbeta interactomes in breast cancer cellsand by Angelo D’Alessandro et al.(DOI:10.1039/C0MB00027B) with thebovine milk proteome. The applicationof state of the art 2DE separationtechnologies is the basic experimentalplatform for the evaluation ofquaternary structure heterogeneity ofplasma apolipoprotein A1 in nephroticsyndromes in the contribution fromLaura Santucci et al. (DOI:10.1039/C0MB00127A). This paper demonstratesthe complexity of protein–protein inter-action rearrangements during definedpathological conditions, casting theproteomics investigation to a new levelof structural complexity.
