CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ TRANSITIONAL WORD
MASTERY AND THEIR READING COMPREHENSION ON
NARRATIVE TEXT OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE AT
ISLAMIC BOARDING SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL BAHRUL ‘ULUM
In this study, the researcher aimed at finding the correlation between
students’ transitional word mastery and their reading comprehension on narrative
text of the eleventh grade at Islamic Boarding Senior High School Bahrul 'Ulum
Kampar regency. The specific objective of this research was to find out whether
there was a significant correlation between students’ transitional word mastery in
improving their reading comprehension on narrative text or not. This study was
conducted at Islamic Boarding Senior High School Bahrul 'Ulum Kampar regency
from 16 March to 13 April 2015. The population in this study was 30 students and
the sample was 30 students. For the technique of taking sample, researcher used
total sampling technique.
In collecting the data, the researcher used written tests in form of multiple
choice for both variables in this study. The tests given to students after giving try
out test were determine the validity and reliability of questions provided to the
students. In analyzing the data, researcher used the passing standard of English
language subjects used by the teacher of English in Islamic Boarding Senior High
School Bahrul 'Ulum. To determine the relationship between two variables
researched, researcher used the Pearson Product-Momment Correlation formula
and analyzed using SPSS version 16.0
From the data analysis with the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation
formula, the results obtained in the test was r = 0.374 0.478. It can be
concluded that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Thus, there was a significant
correlation between students’ transitional word mastery and their reading
comprehension on narrative text of the eleventh grade at Islamic Boarding Senior
High School Bahrul ‘Ulu
