RESUMEN
La vizcacha es un roedor perteneciente al orden Rodentia, Suborden Hystricognathi, familia 
Chinchillidae, género Lagostomus. Es de hábito nocturno y permanece durante el día en su vivienda, 
llamada “vizcachera”. La reproducción de esta especie presenta algunas características poco 
frecuentes en los mamíferos eutherios, tales como poliovulación (200-800 ovocitos) y presencia de una 
alta mortalidad embrionaria. 
Dado que las vizcachas presentan características peculiares en su anatomía e histología, nos 
propusimos realizar un estudio anatómico, histológico, morfométrico y lectinhistoquímico del aparato 
reproductor femenino. 
Se utilizaron 60 hembras adultas silvestres en distintos estados fisiológicos (anestro, fase 
folicular, preñez múltiple y preñez a término). Se realizaron mediciones de los órganos frescos. Los 
órganos aislados fueron fijados en formol y posteriormente procesados para las distintas pruebas 
histológicas e histoquímicas. Todos los cortes fueron sometidos a histomorfometría computarizada y 
los resultados obtenidos fueron analizados estadísticamente. 
La vizcacha presenta dos ovarios de color blanquecino-rosado, aplanados 
dorsoventralmente, situados en la región sublumbar. Están formados por cordones de recorrido 
tortuoso. Presentan una corteza donde se observan los folículos en diferentes etapas de desarrollo, 
cuerpos lúteos verdaderos y accesorios. En todos los ovarios se observaron folículos de diverso tamaño 
con calcificaciones. La médula contiene túbulos tortuosos que representan al epoóforo. El tejido 
intersticial rodea tanto a los folículos como a los cuerpos lúteos. La proporción y cantidad de las 
diferentes estructuras corticales varía en los diferentes estados fisiológicos de las hembras. 
El oviducto es muy delgado y con una disposición muy tortuosa. Este órgano se divide en 
tres segmentos: el infundíbulo, la ampolla y el istmo. La pared del oviducto está constituida por tres 
túnicas: la mucosa, la muscular y la serosa. La mucosa presenta pliegues longitudinales. El glicocalix y 
la zona apical de las células epiteliales son PAS y azul alcian positivas. La túnica muscular varía de

espesor en las distintas regiones. En la vizcacha no existe una porción intramural, descripta en otras 
especies. La incubación con lectinas demuestra variaciones en el patrón de tinción en los diferentes 
estados fisiológicos. 
El útero de la vizcacha es doble. No existe un cuerpo uterino. Presenta tres túnicas: mucosa, 
muscular y serosa. La mucosa presenta variaciones en los diferentes estados fisiológicos, tanto en la 
altura de las células superficiales como en el aspecto de las glándulas. La región del glicocalix y los 
gránulos en la zona apical son PAS y azul alcian positivos. La incubación con diferentes lectinas mostró 
un patrón de unión variable sobre el epitelio superficial y las células de las glándulas, según la 
condición fisiológica de las hembras.
La vagina de la vizcacha está formada por dos regiones anatómicamente distintas: la región 
craneal, que presenta un rafe medial y la región caudal, carente de esta estructura. Se reconocen tres 
túnicas en ambas regiones. La más interna es la mucosa, la túnica media es de tejido muscular liso y la 
más externa es una serosa (tejido conjuntivo y mesotelio) en la región craneal o una adventicia (tejido 
conjuntivo) en la región caudal. El aspecto de la mucosa es muy variable dependiendo del estado 
fisiológico. El epitelio es estratificado, formado por dos o más capas de células. En todos los estados 
fisiológicos, a excepción de la fase folicular, el epitelio presenta una capa superficial de células mucosas 
PAS, azul alcian y mucicarmín positivas. La reactividad frente a las lectinas muestra una gran variación 
de afinidad.
El epitelio vaginal fue estudiado mediante citología exfoliativa. En los extendidos 
provenientes de las hembras en anestro, se observa la presencia de gran cantidad de leucocitos. Las 
células cianófilas profundas son las predominantes. La presencia de células eosinófilas superficiales es 
una característica destacada de la fase folicular. En las hembras preñadas, el rasgo más remarcable es la 
presencia de células mucosas superficiales. 
En el 100% de las hembras estudiadas encontramos una glándula par que abraza a la uretra y 
cuyos conductos principales desembocan en forma independiente en este órgano. Estas estructuras, 
corresponden a la glándula parauretral, próstata femenina o glándula de Skene. Los adenómeros son 
túbulo-alveolares tapizados por un epitelio simple, cúbico en las hembras no preñadas y cilíndrico en 
las gestantes, con reacción intensa frente a la lectina UEA-1.
El ciclo reproductivo de la vizcacha hembra en la provincia de Buenos Aires es distinto al 
descrito en otras regiones, ya que encontramos un celo posparto en la mayoría de las hembras. 
El aparato genital de la vizcacha hembra comparte con el de otros mamíferos muchas características 
morfológicas. No obstante esta especie presenta características que les son propias.

ABSTRACT 
The viscacha is a South American rodent belonging to the order Rodentia, Suborder 
Hystricognathi, family Chinchillidae, gender Lagostomus. It is of night habits, remaining during the day in 
its housing, called “vizcachera”. The reproduction of this species presents some not very frequent 
characteristics among the eutherial mammals, such as polyovulation (200-800 oocytes) and high rate of 
embryonic mortality. 
Our goal was to perform an anatomical, histological, morphometric and lectinhistochemical 
study of the female reproductive tract of the viscacha. 
Sixty wild mature female viscachas in different physiological states (anoestrus, follicular 
phase, multiple pregnancies, and pregnancy at term) were used. Samples of fresh organs were 
obtained and fixed in formaldehyde. Histological and histochemical processing was then carried out. 
Histomorphometry was done with a digital image analyzer. Data obtained from all performed 
measurements were statistically analyzed. 
The viscacha presented two whitish-pink smooth ovaries, located in the sublumbar region 
and formed by tortuous cords. Follicles in different state of maturation as well as true and accessory 
corpus luteum could be observed in the cortex. In all the studied ovaries, calcified follicles of diverse size 
were found. The medulla contained tortuous tubules that represented the epoophoro. An interstitial 
tissue surrounded the follicles and the luteal bodies. The proportion and quantity of the different 
cortical structures varied in the different physiological states of the animals.
The oviduct was very thin and presented a very tortuous disposition. It wais divided into 
three segments: the infundibulum, the ampulla and the isthmus. The oviduct wall was formed by three 
layers: the mucosa, the muscularis and the serosa. The mucosa presented longitudinal pleats. The 
glycocalyx and the apical area of the superficial epithelial cells were PAS and alcian blue positive. The 
muscularis varied in thickness in the different regions. The intramural portion, described in other 
species, was not found in the viscacha. Lectinhistochemical reaction showed variations in the staining 
pattern during the different physiologic states.
The viscacha has a duplex uterus, with absence of a uterine body. It is formed by three layers: 
mucosa, muscularis and serosa. The mucosa presented variations according to the different 
physiologic states, in the height of the superficial cells as well as in the aspect of the glands. 
Carbohydrates staining techniques showed the presence of PAS and alcian blue positive material in the 
region of the glycocalyx and granules in the apical area of the cells. Reaction with different lectins 
showed a variable union pattern in the superficial epithelium and in the cells of the glands, according to 
the physiologic condition of the females.
The vagina is anatomically constituted by two different regions: the cranial region, which 
presents a medial septum and the caudal region, lacking this structure. Three microscopic layers were 
recognized in the entire organ: mucosa, muscularis and serosa (mesothelial and connective tissue) in 
the cranial region or adventitious layer (connective tissue) in the caudal region. The aspect of the 
mucosa varied with the female physiologic state. The epithelium was squamous stratified, formed by 
two or more layers of cells. In all the physiologic states but in the follicular phase, the epithelium 
presented a superficial layer of PAS, alcian blue and mucicarmin positive mucous cells. The affinity 
reaction using lectins showed great variation.
The vaginal epithelium was also studied using exfoliative cytology. The most outstanding 
feature observed in smears obtained from females in anestrous, was the presence of great quantity of 
leukocytes. The cyanophil deep cells were the predominant ones. The presence of superficial 
eosinophilic cells was an outstanding characteristic of the follicular phase. In the pregnant females, the

presence of superficial mucous cells was remarkable.
An even structure that huged the urethra and whose main ducts open independently in it 
was observed in 100% of the females under study. These glandular structures were compatible with the 
paraurethral gland, female prostate or Skene's gland. The adenomers were of the tubulo-alveolar type 
and react intensely with the UEA-1 lectin. They were formed by a single epithelium, which was cubic in 
the non-pregnant females and cylindrical in the pregnant ones.
The reproductive cycle of the female viscacha in the province of Buenos Aires was different 
to that described in other regions, since we found a postpartum zeal in most of the females.
The reproductive system of the female viscacha shares many morphologic characteristic with other 
mammals. Nevertheless, this species presents characteristic of its own.
