Briony Heyhoe-Pullar  Introduction  Throughout these times of change and uncertainty, libraries in both the public and academic sectors have undergone continuous development.  They have met the challenges facing them and turned them into opportunities. They have analysed their processes, resulting in the creation of effective strategies that enable them to think smarter and utilise resources to their full potential, gaining efficiencies wherever possible.    The 2012 NAG Conference will focus on these developments. As the central theme of the conference  ‘Learning from Success’ suggests , we will endeavour  to find out how libraries have adapted to the changing situation, what has made these developments so successful, and how they have benefitted those implementing them.     As always the conference will include a mixture of plenary sessions and workshops delivered by practitioners from a variety of backgrounds, chosen to stimulate lots of thoughts and generate discussion.  We will look at the hot topics of the moment such as reading list management, featuring a case study of a university library that has developed its own home grown system; developments in e-books in public and academic libraries; Patron Driven Acquisition (with two very different case studies from librarians that have implemented PDA at their institutions). In addition, we will be considering how both academic and public libraries are using the latest developments in Library Management Systems to streamline their processes.  There will also be the chance to hear about the project that won the prestigious 2011 NAG Award, and an update on how ‘The Hive’, Worcestershire’s pioneering new joint initiative between public and university libraries, has progressed twelve months on.  And as if all that wasn’t enough, there will be opportunities to share your own experiences, whilst networking with colleagues in both public and academic libraries, library suppliers and publishers.    We look forward to seeing you in York in September!  Speakers   Owen Stephens  Owen Stephens has been working in library and IT services in the Higher Education sector for over 15 years and now works as an independent consultant specialising in helping libraries exploit IT. Owen wrote a reading list module based on the Aleph library management system while working at Royal Holloway, University of London, and is still haunted by the memory. Owen's most recent foray into the world of reading lists was in the Open University TELSTAR project which integrated the RefWorks reference management system into the Moodle VLE software. He is currently working with Southampton Solent University to extend the TELSTAR development to deliver reading lists in their Moodle installation.  Dave Pattern  Dave Pattern is the Library Systems Manager at The University of Huddersfield, with responsibility for the continuing development of the web services and facilities provided by the library. A web developer with 15 years of experience, he previously worked for a major UK library book supplier. A committed "2.0" advocate, he was thrilled to be one of the Library Journal’s "Movers and Shakers" in 2009 and was named IWR Information Professional of the Year in 2010.  [In their session (entitled ‘Read ‘em and Weep’), Owen and Dave will explore what reading lists are, how they are used, and why they seem so problematic. They will then look at different approaches to meeting these challenges, including the recent work to develop a reading list system at the University of Huddersfield.]  Anna Grigson  At the end of 2010, Royal Holloway ran a pilot project to evaluate the potential of patron-driven e-books. Using EBL as the provider, over 100,000 e-books were made available on demand to the College’s students. This case study will outline some of the practical issues involved in setting up and managing patron-driven e-books, the lessons learned, and next steps, as well as the larger questions it has raised for how the library can use different business models to acquire content.    Anna Grigson is Head of Technical Services at Royal Holloway, University of London, where she leads the team responsible for the acquisition and cataloguing of the library’s print and online resources. She has a background in managing e-resources in academic libraries, having previously worked as an e-resources librarian both at Royal Holloway and at the University of Westminster. She has recently spoken on patron-driven e-books at the UKSG Conference, and also contributed to E-books in Libraries (Facet, 2010) and Electronic Resource Management: a handbook (Facet, forthcoming).  Paul Williams Paul is currently working as Team Leader for Academic Services at the University of Worcester, managing a team of systems librarians, academic liaisons and research support staff, as well as services such as Interlibrary Requests and Digitisation. Paul has worked at the University since 2000, having joined as a library assistant and worked up through a variety of roles, including as a Team Leader for the Customer Services team. For the last two years, the Hive project has been a major focus and Paul has been leading workstreams responsible for building a joint library management system, a full self-service solution, and internal communication tools (Vocera), as well as preparing University services for the transition to the Hive.   David Pearson  Exiled Yorkshireman, cricket fanatic, Halifax Town supporter, deltiologist and Wilbur Smith fan, David Pearson has worked in libraries since 1978.  Having worked previously at Halifax Central, and, since qualifying at Leeds, for Worcestershire County Council in its various guises, David has been involved with stock and acquisitions since 1994.  Working in very close partnership with colleagues from the County Council, the University of Worcester and library suppliers, responsibility for stock analysis, specification, provision and access - from the County Council side - for The Hive has been a close focus of David’s for the past two years, in his role as Stock Manager.  No stranger to NAG – ex-committee member, Conference organiser and Quizmeister – David will be returning to update the Conference on this fascinating new initiative.  Sue Wills Sue has worked as the Senior Stock and Reader Development Manager in Kensington & Chelsea, with overall responsibility for all stock, reader development and stock promotion work for the public library service including the acquisition, cataloguing and servicing of all library materials for the service. She managed, implemented and monitored the Central Buying Consortium (CBC) contracts, and also worked on the new CBC e-book tender.    [Sue will be talking about the project ‘Community Curated Collections’ that won her, and the stock and reader development team at Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, the 2011 NAG Award].
