1/3 Get our newsletter How music became so core to James Bondthat someone bet £15,000 on the themeAugust 3, 2015 6.28am BSTCatherine HaworthLecturer in Music at University of HuddersfieldBetting was recently suspended by William Hill on the identity of the singer of the theme songfor the next James Bond film, Spectre, after an attempt to place £15,000 on Thom Yorke andRadiohead.Speculation over Radiohead’s involvement in the soundtrack for Bond 24 makes them thelatest in a long line of rumoured performers, including Sam Smith, Florence and the Machine,Paloma Faith, Lorde, and Ellie Goulding – whose cryptic social media posts have alsosparked a recent flurry of betting.Compared with the hugely successful Bond franchise, £15,000 is obviously small change. Butthe ongoing interest in who will provide Spectre’s vocals demonstrates the prominence ofmusic in the Bond franchise’s well­oiled marketing machine, as well as within the filmsthemselves. For what other film can you imagine the choice of musician sparking suchintrigue? 2/3Music has been a core element of the Bond brand since the 1962 adaptation of Ian Fleming’snovel Dr. No, helping to tie together films, videogames, merchandise, and marketing. It is partof the Bond “formula”, a key element that remains pleasurably familiar, but offers enoughscope for variation to keep new products feeling fresh and relevant.Classic popBond soundtracks sit at the intersection of two traditions. They combine the extensiveorchestral scores of Hollywood’s golden age with popular music that keeps pace withchanging tastes.Behind the classic signature sound was British composer John Barry, who assisted MontyNorman in scoring Dr. No and provided incidental music and title songs for a further 11 Bondfilms. Barry combines jazzy, big band brass and sweeping, romantic string lines with timelesssongwriting structures. His mixture of classic and contemporary styles has continued toinfluence recent Bond composers including David Arnold and Thomas Newman.The Bond sound is dominated by the music of 007 himself, highlighting his experience andparticular brand of heroic masculinity. Most famously, this takes the shape of Norman’s iconicJames Bond Theme, indelibly linked with 007’s trademark – “Bond. James Bond”. – first seenin Dr. No’s casino scene.The theme acts as both a stylistic anchor and a basis for musical development, as thesoundtrack to Spectre’s recently released trailer shows. Its memorable and succinct hooks –from the chromatic opening bass loop and guitarist Vic Flick’s surf rock melody, through to thehowling trumpets of the swing­style climax – provide the basis for many other musical cuesand motifs within the films and songs of the franchise. Familiar music is combined with newmaterial composed to fit the storyline and characters of 007’s latest escapade.Licence to thrillBut the Bond franchise isn’t content with just an orchestral score. No Jaws or Lord of theRings, this. They also bring the big names of popular culture on board, with a new themedsong accompanying the opening credit sequence to each Bond film.These sequences are one of the most spectacular and influential elements in a series strewnwith exotic locations, breathtaking stunts, and glamorously gorgeous casting. The innuendo­saturated titles showcase the stylish excess of the franchise. They have often been criticisedfor their preoccupation with the female body, though more recent title sequences haveincreased the visual focus on 007 himself, perhaps aiming to put the physical aspects ofDaniel Craig’s stardom centre­stage.The visual audacity of these sequences is matched and heightened by their musicalaccompaniment: most commonly the classic “Bond song”, with its dramatic and often tonguein cheek lyrics, extravagant orchestration, and arresting vocals by current or up and comingstars with plenty of marketing potential. Epitomised by Shirley Bassey’s recordings forGoldfinger, Diamonds are Forever, and Moonraker, these performances bring a powerful andintensely personal aspect to the Bond song. Bringing in the tragic yet triumphant figure of thediva not only heightens the camp excesses of the title sequence, but also pushes music to thefore of the cinematic Bond experience.8/4/2015 3/3Little wonder then that the casting of the next Bond vocalist always creates such a buzz.Theme songs generate both direct sales and marketing capital, are an iconic element of theBond experience, and provide a spectacular way of introducing new music and fresh voiceswhilst remaining true to the sound of the franchise.The Spectre theme’s current front­runners both fit this model. Goulding’s distinctive voice andelectro pop styling reshapes the diva for a modern audience, whilst Radiohead bring acanonic but original sound that mirrors the familiar­yet­fresh pleasures of a new Bond film.What is certain is that whoever it is they, along with Bond, will enjoy a jump in popularity oncethe singer is announced.MusicFilmJames Bond
