1/5Hard Evidence: are more older peoplegoing to university?September 2, 2014 2.14pm BSTJill JohnesReader, Department of Economics, Lancaster UniversityHalls full of 18­year­old freshers running riot? Bragging tales of gap year misadventure?Older students starting a university course can sometimes find it hard to fit in. But a growingnumber of mature students are now applying to study at university. But who are they, andwhat does this rising trend in applications mean for universities?According to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, 2014 has seen thecontinuation of a small but steady annual increase in application rates to university frompeople older than 21.But there is a difference between the number of people applying to university and starting adegree. While the application rate has been rising slowly, the number of first degree entrantshas actually fallen very slightly in recent years. Yet early signs from this year’s clearingsystem show that as of August 29, there has been a 6% increase in the number of maturestudents over 25 placed on university courses since A Level results were announced.Around a third of UK­domiciled first degree entrants are mature students. This proportion hasremained reasonably constant over the last decade.Level­headed. uonottingham, CC BY­NC­SA3/3/2016 2/5It is somewhat remarkable given the changes observed in the higher education sector overthe same period, in particular rising fees and the lifting of the cap on the numbers of studentswith good A level grades that universities can admit. The latter change is most likely to attractextra young entrants with traditional entry qualifications, thus putting downward pressure onthe proportion of mature students in the overall student body.Student composition and backgroundPublished data on the whole mature student population across all UK universities is difficultto find. But we can piece together a picture of a group of students who differ from theiryounger counterparts in terms of socio­economic background and university experience.Mature students cover a wide age range. In 2012­13, 34% of mature students staring a newcourse were in the 21­24 age range, compared with 22% in the 25­29 group and 43% in theoldest category of 30 and older.But these figures conceal a large difference in the age composition of full­time and part­timestudents. There are fewer older full­students (see first pie chart) than there are part­timestudents (second pie chart). Much of the published data comparing mature and youngstudents refers only to full­time students.% of first year first degree UK­domiciled undergraduatestudents (full and part­time) by age. HESA, Students in HigherEducation Institutions, Author provided% of full­time mature first year undergraduates by age HESA,Students in Higher Education Institutions, Table H 2012/13,3/3/2016 3/5Experience at universityMature students are more likely to study on a part­time basis than young students: in 2012­13, 91.5% of part­time first degree entrants were mature, while only 21.1% of those startingfull­time courses were mature students. They also choose different subjects compared totheir young colleagues.In particular, the percentage of mature entrants taking studies allied to medicine (whichincludes nursing) is considerably larger than younger students. Smaller differences can beseen in education and computer sciences. In contrast, the sciences (biological, physical andmathematical) and history and creative arts attract smaller percentages of mature students.Mature students are also less likely than young students to study at an older, pre­1992university. The lead taken by the new universities in attracting mature students may be aconsequence of the broad range of courses on offer. These might be particularly attractive tostudents with non­traditional entry qualifications.Author provided% of part­time mature first year undergraduates by ageHESA, Students in Higher Education Institutions, Table H2012/13, Author providedSubject of entrants to full­time first degree courses, 2012­13.HESA, UKPIs: Widening participation of under­representedgroups, tables SP2 and SP3, 2012/13, Author provided3/3/2016 4/5Higher drop­out ratesWhat then are the challenges to universities presented by mature students? Early researchhas suggested that older students may be less likely to complete their course than youngstudents, although this result can vary by subject or by gender.An examination of recent data suggests that the non­continuation rate at university iscertainly much higher among mature students than younger ones, but in both cases the ratehas fallen in recent years, and more rapidly among mature students.Returning to education is likely to cause challenges for mature students: picking up studiesafter a break, integrating with young students with different life experiences, and coping withfinancial problems are just a few of the difficulties. Universities should be aware of this andoffer the support to maintain their participation in higher education.But for those who do stay the course, higher education can prove to be a highly positiveexperience: 58% of those aged 25 and older were in full­time employment within six monthsof graduation, compared with 55% of those aged 24 and under. This small difference in full­time employment between mature and young first degree graduates has persisted for thepast six years.The diverse backgrounds of mature students contribute to the richness of university life. Thisfits with the government’s push to extend the opportunities of university education to morepeople.Hard Evidence is a series of articles in which academics use research evidence to tackle theFull­time first degree entrants by type of university, 2012­13HESA, Author provided% of students not completing their first academic year. HESA,Author provided3/3/2016
