Pendidikan IPS mengemban tugas penting berupa membentuk karakter peserta
didik dan merupakan tujuan Pendidikan IPS untuk membentuk karakter mandiri
dan peduli sosial. Boarding School menjadi salah satu pembinaan karakter yang
berdampak signifikan bagi kehidupan peserta didik, sehingga peneliti tertarik
untuk mengangkat hal tersebut dalam sebuah penelitian. Penelitian ini bertujuan
untuk mengunggap dan mengetahui secara mendalam tentang realitas karakter
mandiri dan peduli sosial peserta didik, proses pembinaan karakter mandiri dan
peduli sosial, faktor-faktor penunjang dan penghambat, peran dan upaya pihak
sekolah dalam pembinaan. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMP Daarut Tauhid
Boarding School Bandung dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan
metode deskriptif dan data yang diperoleh melalui teknik observasi, wawancara
dan studi dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian ini terungkap bahwa: 1) Realitas karakter
peserta didik dilihat dari sikap dan perilakunya cukup baik. SMP Daarut Tauhiid
Boarding School menerapkan karakter mandiri dan peduli sosial dengan berbagai
kegiatan. 2) Proses pembinaan dilakukan melalui pembelajaran IPS di kelas, kegiatan di
sekolah dan di boarding school, melalui jadwal rutinan harian, kegiatan pembiasaan
rutinan, kegiatan spontan dan kegiatan keteladanan, ektrakulikuler dan tata tertib
sekolah. 3) Faktor-faktor pendukung internal berupa kesadaran diri peserta didik,
sedangkan ekternalnya berupa dukungan orang tua, sinergitas civitas sekolah, sarana
prasarana, pakar bidang tertentu, banner tata tertib ditia dinding sekolah sebagai
pengingat, pengangkatan tema karakter bulanan, pendekatan personal kepada peserta
didik. Faktor-faktor penghambat internal adalah jiwa egois yang masih anak anak dan
kurangnya kekonsistenan pihak sekolah menetapkan tata tertib, sedangkan untuk
eksternalnya orang tua kurang sepemahaman dengan pihak sekolah, kurang maksimalnya
arahan dari guru maupun musrifah, kontroling yang kurang, sarana yang kurang lengkap,
kurangnya inputan dari luar. 4) Peran dan upaya pihak sekolah dengan penetapan visi,
misi dan tujuan sekolah berdasarkan karakter karakter mandiri dan peduli sosial.
kebijakan sekolah, penetapan pedoman kurikulum yang terintegrasi dengan nilai-nilai
karakter, tata tertib yang dilengkapi dengan reward dan punisment, penyusunan program
kegiatan, fasilitas, alokasi waktu yang bermuara pada proses pembinaan karakter mandiri
dan peduli sosial, mendatangkan pakar bidang tertentu untuk mengatasi masalah peserta
didik, dan pengembangan program kegiatan.----------Social studies plays an important role in forming students’ characters, and particularly
realizing the goal of social studies education to develop the character traits of
independence and social awareness. Boarding school becomes of one the media for
fostering characters that can have significant impact on students’ life; hence, the
researcher is interested in raising this topic in the present research. The research aims to
reveal and find in-depth the reality of the character traits of independence and social
awareness of students, the process of fostering the character traits, the supporting and
inhibiting factors, and the roles and efforts of a boarding school in fostering the character
traits. It was carried out at SMP Daarut Tauhid Boarding School Bandung using the
qualitative approach with descriptive method, in which data were gathered through
interview, observation, and documentation. The findings of this research reveal that: 1) In
reality, students’ character traits are quite good,. The character trait of independence is
listed in the school vision, and social awareness is mentioned in the fourth mission of the
school; 2) The process of fostering character traits is done through social studies
instruction in the classroom, school and boarding school activities, daily routines,
habituation activities, spontaneous and exemplary activities, extracurricular activities, and
school rules and regulations; 3) The internal supporting factors comprise students’ selfawareness,
while the external ones are in the forms of support from parents, synergy
among school community members, infrastructure availability, experts of certain fields,
the posting of banners of school regulations on school walls as reminders, the raising of
monthly character theme, and personal approach to students. The internal inhibiting
factors include students’ selfish attitude and the school’s lack of consistency in
implementing the rules and regulations, whereas the external inhibiting factors include a
lack of mutual understanding between parents and school, less than optimal directions
from both teachers and musrifah, a lack of control, a lack of facilities, and a lack of
external input; 4) The roles and efforts of the school have been in line with the vision,
missions, and goals set by the school based on the character traits of the character traits of
independence and social awareness, school policy, curriculum guidelines integrated with
character traits, regulations accompanied by reward and punishment, program planning,
facilities, time allocation for the process of fostering the character traits of independence
and social awareness, the activity of inviting experts of certain fields to help solve
students’ problems, and program activity development
