ABSTRAK
The effect of albendazole on pregnant rats was investigated. Sixteen female rats were divided randomly into 4 groups of 4 each treated with albendazole 20, 10, 5 and 0 mg/kg body weight, respectively. On the 19th day of gestation, rats were sacrified and the morphology of fetus were assessed.
The results indicated that resorption on 100% fetuses was caused by albendazole 20 mg/kg body weight, and abnormalities on 42, 30% fetuses were by 10 mg/kg body weight of albendazole. The dose of 5 and 0 mg/kg body weight did not cause either resorption or abnormality of fetus.
It was concluded that the lowest possible dose of
albendazole resulted in teratogenic fetus, appeared to be 10 mg/kg body weight.
