Abstract
バラ科 Rosaceae バラ属 Rosa に属する植物の和名の多くは「○○バラ」「○○イバラ」と名づけられているが、ハマナス (学名 Rosa rugosa、漢名「玫瑰 (まいかい)」) とチョウシュン (学名 Rose chinensis、漢名「月季花」また「長春」とも) はその例外である (松村任三著『改正増補植物名彙』、本田正次著『日本植物名彙』、『牧野日本植物図鑑』による)。これはこれらの種がその名で近代植物学の受容以前に日本で定着していたことに因るようである。チョウシュン (長春) という名が日本の文献の中にどのように現れ、どのように鑑賞されていたのかといったことについては、「そうび」 (薔薇) という名とともに、断片的ではあれ、既に言及されている。本稿ではハマナスの漢語表記「玫瑰」が幕末から明治維新前後において西洋文化の表象的意味を担っていたことを明らかにしたい
