SINGH & LAKSHMAN PRASADDep artment of Chemistry, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi 221005Received 9 December 1974; accepted 19 March. 1975o 01\ 11Benzoylisonicotinic acid hydrazide C5H,NC-NIH-N"H-C-CaHi (BINH) forms neutral chelatesof the compositions VO(BINH-Hh and M(BINH-H) •.2H.O [where M = Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II),Cu(II) or Zn(II)]. The magnetic and electronic spectral data indicate that Mn(I1), Co(II), Ni(II)and Cu(I1) form spin-free octahedral complexes while V02+ forms distorted square-pyramidalcomplex. Analytical data and infrared spectra of the chelates indicate that BINH behaves asa mononegattve bidentate ligand and water molecules are coordinated. The probable bondingsites in the chelates are the enolic oxygen arising from the enolization of the keto group attachedto the pyridine ring and N2of the -NH. group. Wherever possible, ligand field parameters like10 Dq, B', p, po and LFSE have been evaluated.INcontinuation of our earlier work! on theTi(IV) and Zr(IV) complexes of benzoylisonico-tinic acid hydrazide (BINH), we report herethe results of our studies on VO(II), Mn(II), Co(II),Ni(II) , Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes of BINH.Materials and MethodsPreparation and analysis of the chelates - Chelateswere prepared by mixing together hot aqueoussolutions of the metal nitrates or sulphatesand BINHI in ,....,1:2 molar ratio and addingNH4CI-NH40H buffer (except for Cu(II) complex tilla slight turbidity appeared. The precipitation of thechelates was aided by digestion on a water-bath forabout one hr. The chelates were suction filtered,washed successively with water, ethanol and etherand dried at room temperature.Chelates were analvsed for metal contentsemploying standard literature procedures, afterdestroying the organic part with a mixture of nitricand hydrochloric acids and then with concentratedsulphuric acid. Nitrogen was estimated by micro-analysis. Hydrazine was estimated volumetricallyusing KIO: after subjecting the chelates to acidhydrolysis for ,....,2 hr. The water content was esti-mated by finding out the loss in weight suffered bythe chelates on heating at ,....,1600 for 2-3 hr. Theanalytical data are given in Table 1.Physical measurements - Magnetic susceptibilityof the chelates was measured using a Cahn FaradayElectrobalanceemploying Hg[(Co(CNS)4J as calibrant.Diamagnetic corrections were estimated by theprocedure of Figgis and Lewis". The effectivemagnetic moments of the chelates are included inTable 1.Electronic spectra [nujol) of the ligand and thechelates were recorded on a Cary-14 recording spec-trophotometer. MARCH 1976Infrared spectra (nujol) of the complexes and theIigand were recorded on a Perkin-Elmer spectro-photometer model 621.Results and DiscussionThe .formation of neutral- -complexes of 1 :2stoichiometry (Table 1) suggests that the ligandcoordinates in the enolic form. The probable bond-ing sites in the chelates are the enolic oxygenarising from the enolization of the keto groupattached to the pyridine ring and N2 of the -NHgroup.The chelates are insoluble in common organicsolvents like benzene. chloroform. carbon tetrachlo-ride. ethanol. acetone. THF. DMF and DMSO etc.and have high decomposition temperature (>250°).The formation of anhydrous chelates from thehydrated chelates with change in colour at relativelyhigh temperatures (,....,160°) indicates that the watermolecules are coordinated. The coordination ofwa.termolecules is further confirmed by a comparisonof the infrared spectra of the hydrated andanhydrous chelates discussed later.The corrected magnetic moments of Mn(II).Co(II). Ni(II) and Cu(II} chelates lie well within therange expected for complexes of these metal ionspossessing octahedral geometryt (Table 1) Themagnetic moment of VO(BINH-H)lI is also normal.being close to the spin only value expected for oneunpaired electron in vanadyl complexes-,Ultraviolet spectrum of BINH in nujol showsthree bands at 33300. 34800 and 35700 em-I. thelast band being similar to that obtained for isoni-cotinamide and isonicotinic acid",The UV spectra of all the chelate! (Table 2) showone or two bands in the range 34500-37700 em?which correspond to the ligand bands occurring inthe same region. Since no d-d transition is expectedfor Znll+ having a dlo configuration. the 28570 cm-1band in the Zn(II) chelate corresponds probablyto 33300 cm-1 band observed in the ligand. Thered shift in this band is presumably due to agreater degree of conjugation in the ligand oncoordination. Likewise. the above ligand band inMn(II). Co(II). Ni(II) and Cu(II) chelates also isred shifted and is observed in the range 28600-30700crrr+.The position of the bands in VO(BINH-H)2 andtheir assignment suggest a distorted squarepyramidal geometry (C2v symmetry) for thechelate".The visible region spectra (Table 2) of Co(II) andNi(II) chelates show bands characteristic ofoctahedral coordination around the central metalionst-", Also, the Vi/VIratio (= 1,61) for the nickelchelate lies in the range reported for octahedralNi(II) complexes-v. The values of 10 Dq and B'(Table 2) in the Co(II) and Ni(II) chelates suggesta place between water and ammonia for the ligandin the spectrochemical series. Further. the valuesof B' show that the metal-ligand orbital overlap isquite appreciable in the two chelates.A broad band at 14100 cm-l in Cu(II)-BINHchelate may be due to the merging of three transi-tions (Table 2) in a D4" symmetry-t. The loweringof the symmetry from 0" to D4h may be dueto Jahn-Teller distortion so common in hexa-coordinated Cu(II) complexes.The bonding sites in the BINH complexes havebeen established by a careful comparison of theirinfrared spectra with that of the parent ligand.BINH shows prominent IR bands at 3270 (vNH),1680, 1660 (vC=O) and 900 cm! (vN-N).
