The electrical conductivity dataof pressed pellet at different temperatures have also been reported.METAL molybdates have been reported to beuseful catalysts for dcsulphurization, dehydro-genation, oxidation and other types of reactionof industrial importance':", The formation andcomposition of polymolybdates of thallium] I) havebeen studied amperornetrically? and the crystalstructure of thalliumrl) trimolybdate (TI2M030lO)has been determined", Although thallous molybdate,T12Mo04, has been prepared from solution" and thephase diagram studies involving TI2Mo04-Mo03have been rnade'", little attention has been paidto the study of solid state chemistry of tha llousmolybdate. This paper describes the preparationof thallous molybdate in the solid state and itscharacterization by chemical nnalysis, powder X-raydiffraction pattern, density measurement, 1R spectro-scopy, TG and electrical conductivity.Materials and MethodsThallous carbonate (BDH), molybdenum trioxide(AR) and acetone (GR) were used without furtherpurification.Preparation of thalloas molybdate - A very lightyellow thallous molybdate has been prepared inthe solid state by the method used for thalloustungstate!'. A homogeneous (1 :1) molar reactionmixture was taken in a gold crucible and heatedat 540° ± 10° for 3 hr. FIrst, a mixture of yellowand black reaction product was formed which wasfinally converted to light yellow thallous molybdateon cooling, grinding and reheating at 580° ± 10° twoto three times for about 3 hr.Thallium (I) in thallous molybdate was analysedby usual volumetric method-s. The percentageof Tl(1) was found to be 71'4% (Calc. for TI2Mo04:Tl, 71·9%).Crystal structure - The powder Xvray diffractionpattern of thallous molybdate was taken with X-raydiffractometer using CuK« radiation. Attempts weremade to compare the powder diffraction pattern ofTiaMo04 with those of a number of compounds suchas T12W04, ~-K2Cr04' Be2Si04, Ca2Pb04, Li2BeF4,Li2W04, K2S04 and Na2S04 from ASTM powderdiffraction file. It has been found that none ofthese compounds were Isostructural with TI2Mo04•Therefore, the pattern was indexed by Hesse-Lipson'smethod. Agreement between observed and caleu-lat ed sin20hkl values (Table 1) was satisfactory.Accuracy of the indexing was also checked byde Wolff criteria':', Figure of merit (Table 1) forthallous molybdate showed that indexing was correct.The lattice parameters of thallous molybdate wererefined by least square method.Density measurement - The density of thallousmolybdate measured with a pyknometer using to-luene as a displacing liquid was found to be 6·55± 0·06 gJml at 35° ± 0·1 -c.Thermogravimetry (TG) - Thermogravimetry oftliallous molybdate and an equimolar reactionmixture of thallous carbonate and molybdenumtrioxide were carried out with the help of a thermo-gravimetric analyser (Fertilizer Corp. of IndiaLtd. Sindri}. Gold crucible was used for theexperiment. After TG, the sample was cooledslowly to about 40° in the furnace. An increasein the weight of the sample was observed.IR measurements - The IR spectrum of thallousmolybdate in KBr disc was measured in the range4000-700 ern"! using a Perkin-Elmer spectrophoto-meter model No. 137.Electrical conductivity measurements - The electri-cal conductivity of the solid pressed pellet (pressure:>000 kg) of thallous molybdate employing twoelectrode method was measured in the temperaturerange 60-480° with a Toshniwal conductivity bridgeTABLE 1 - CRYSTAL DATA FOR THALLOUS MOLYBDATEd (A) sin20hkl hkl 1/10--------Obs. The pellet was held betweentwo gold electrodes of suitable size which was thenplaced in a furnace.Results and DiscussionThe reaction between thallous carbonate andmolybdenum trioxide leading to the formation ofa very light yellow thallous molybdate may followeither route A or route Band C as shown below.Tl20 +CO,/n//TI,CO,,,"\..AMo03'" -,C MoO.TI,MoO, +CO,lt is difficult to decide which of the above routesis actually operative. However, a comparison. ofTG plots of Tl2C03 and an equimolar reactionmixture of TI2C03 and Mo03 (Fig. 1) shows thatT12C03 starts decomposing at a lower temperaturewhen Mo03 is added as compared to the case of pureT12C03. This shows that TI2C03 primarily reactswith Mo03 to produce TI2MoO,. However, a cert~mamount of T12C03 not in immediate contact WithMo03 can decompose into T120 which may subse-quently react with Mo03• Further it has beenfound from the capillary experiment at 2600 thatthallous carbonate· diffuses 0·064 cm into Mo03.This is in agreement with the observations ofKononyuk et al.14 that the lower melt inr; speciesdiffuses into species having higher melting point.o100 200 :300 400 500 62:3'"'"0 4..Jl-I~ 5w~~678TEMPER ATURE;CFig. 1 - TG curves for thallous molybdate (,.",,) an eq ui-molar reaction mixture of thallous carbonate and molybdenumtrioxide (0) and thallous carbonate (0)850The powder X-ray diffraction pattern of thallousmolybdate indicated the Iorrnation of. a singlephased thallous molybdate, since the ciiffract ionlines corresponding to '1'12C03, Tl20 and Mo03 areabsent. The X-ray diffraction studies show that(i) the crystal lattice belongs to hexagonal system;(ii) the unit cell dimensions are: a = b = 6'526 A;c = 15·417 A; V = S'68x10-22 crn": z = 4; and(iii) the X-ray density using four molecules ofTlzMo04 in the unit cell is 6·65 glml which IS 111good agreement with the experimental value.An examination of diffraction pattern showsbroadening of difiract ion lines. This may be eitherdue to imperfections present in the cr yst al Iat tice'"or due to crystallite size. The crystallite size ofthallous molybdate, calculated by using ScherrerIormula-" (1)tltkl = 0·9 A . 360 A ... (1)~ cos ()j3 21twhere thkl = crystallite size perpendicular to theplane likl; A = wavelength, ~ = half maximum linebreadth and 0 = BraGg ang lc.The crystallite size lies in. the range 164-454 Afor different Ml planes. lt lS known that m ~heabsence Of lattice strains-", the materials should givesharp lines at all angles if crystallite size > 1.000A. At crystallite size ~ 100 A, low angle Iinesbecome very wide and more. difiuse. Thus, tl~ebroadening due to crystallite size may be a possibi-lity. However, the broadening due to crystalimperfections may also not be ruled out.Duri ng TG experiments of thallous molybdate,it is observed that there is a decrease in weight ofthe sample as the temperature is increased. Thismay be due to the escape of oxygen from. latticesites. The escape of oxygen from the lat t icc sitesmay create oxide ion vacancies as represented below:[1/202+ 0+2c-or02- (lattice sites) ---7 1/202+O-+e-or1/202+ 0--where 0 = oxide ion vacancy, 0-, 0-- = oxideion vacancies with oue and two trapped electronsrespectively. The electrons trapped in the oxideion vacancies may impart interesting propertiesto the crystal such as electrical conductivity .The electrical conductivity of solid thallous molyb-date measured at different temperatures providesinformation about the imperfection. The result sindicate three distinct regions (Fig. 2) and the con-ductivity increases with the increase in temperature.The three temperature ranges and the correspondingenergies of activation are given below:Temp.range°CEnergy ofactivationeV700 60-160160-360360-4800·1650·5671·79lt has been observed that with decrease intemperature the magnitude of electrical conduc-tivity decreases. It has been confirmed by coolingin a desiccator that during cooling the sample takesup oxygen an.l not moisture. Thus the oxide ionvacancies in the crystal lattice are conserved re-sult in-; in the decrease of the current carriers andhence the conductivity.IR spectrum of thallous molybdate exhibits aband at 825 ern"! which on analogy with that ofso.Iium molybdate?" indicates that M06+ ions inthallous molybdate may also occupy tetrahedralsites18,19.AcknowledgementOne of us (I.D.) is thankful to the CSIR, NewDelhi, for financial support.
