Among the oscillatory chemicalreactions occurring in non-biological systems, Be1ou-sov-Zhabotinskii reaction has been studied ext en-sively-+, Chemical oscillations have been observedusing citric acid, malonic acid, malic acid, acetonedicarboxylic acid, acetoacetic ester, barbituric acid,monobromomalonic acid, dibromomalonic acid, and2,4-pentanedione as organic substrates; Ce(III),Mn(II), Fr(PhenW, Fe(Dipy);+ and Ru(DipyW(ref. 5-7) as catalysts and aqueous sulphuric, nitric"and phosphoric acids'' as the reaction media. Nosubstitute for potassium bromate has been repm tedso far. Detailed mechanism of this reaction hasbeen proposed by Noyes and coworkers-P+". Thepurpose of this communication is to report thatoscillations are observed when mixtures of acetone-tartaric acid and acetone-mandelic acid are usedas organic substrates in Belousov-Zhabotinskiireaction.Acetone (BDH), tartaric acid (BDH), mandelicacid (May & Baker), potassium bromate (Riedel),eerie sulphate (BDH), and sulphuric acid (Basynth)have been used without further purification.Procedure - Chemical oscillations have beenrecorded by measuring e.m.f. across a bright platinumelectrode and a calomel reference electrode dippedin the reaction mixture. The concentration ofpotassium chloride in calomel reference electrodewas kept very low (O'0025M) because chloride ionsare known to inhibit chemical oscillatic ns inBelousov-Zhabotinskii reactien. E.m.f. was record-ed using an electronic recorder (EncardioriteElectronics Pvt. Ltd, Lucknow). The reaction wasperformed in a reaction cell" containing soluticns ofpotassium bromate and eerie sulphate in 3N sulphuricacid. Solution of acetone and one of the organicacids (3N sulphuric acid medium) was kept in theside limb of the cell which was fitted with a stop-cock. Theautocatalytic step would remain intact so long ascercus and bromate are in the mixture. The organicsubstrate in Belousov-Zhabot inskii reagent merelyaffects the rate of redox reactien and the brornina-tion reaction. Since most of the organic compoundswhich showed oscillations have a reactive methylenegroup or a ~-keto group, it was thought for quitesometime that such a group would be necessaryfor oscillation. It should be noted that ~-keto gi oupsimply facilitates brominatic n.It follows horn the above arguments that a binarymixture of organic substrates one component ofwhich undergoes br ominatir.n reacticn and theother undergoes oxidation should also exhibit oscil-lations under suitable circumstances. Tartaric acidand mandelic acid do not undergo br ominationwhereas acetone can undergo brominati: n readily!".Tartaric acid and mandelic!" acid are oxidized easily.It has been reported that acetone can also be oxidiz-ed by ceriuml" but perhaps the rates of oxidatic nof tartaric and mandelic are faster and hence acombination of acetone and tartaric acid and acetoneand mandelic acid should exhibit oscillations. (5)The reaction was performed in a cell as was doneby previous workers+ In all these svstems theconcentration of the organic substrate- used wasO'032M, those of KBrOa, Mn2+ (or Ce4+, in system-2)and H2S04 were O·OHM, O·008M 1·5M respectively.The oscillations in e.m.f. denoting [CeHjCeS+] or[Mn3+jMn2+] were recorded by a potentiometricrecorder (Encardiorite Electronics Pvt. Ltd, Luck-now) at 32°. The potentiometric traces are re-poducible and characteristic of the system. Theseare represented in Fig. 1.Any periodic function j(t) of time t can berepresented in general by Fourier series of thefollowing typef(t)= Ao=A1sin wt+A2sin 2wt+Aasin 3wt+ '" .+B1 cos wt+B2 cos 2wt+Bs cos 3wt+ ....where Ao, AI> A2,···· and B1, B2, Bs,···· areconstants. w denotes the frequency. The numberof sine and cosine terms in the series depends onthe number of harmonics present in the system.The constant terms in the above equation can beevaluated by standard method described in theliterature".In case of system (3), a square wave is obtainedawl evaluation of constants is easy. For system(1), we observe that it is a combination of squarewave and saw-tooth waves. In the case of (2), (4)and (5) the decay curves are parabolic curves. Theequation for these cruves was fitted by the methodof least squares and the Fourier constants evaluated.The results are recorded in Table 1 where y denotesthe e.m.f. of the redox couple [CeHjCe3+] or[Mn3+jMn2+].It should be noted that in the reaction wherecerium ion is a reactant, noise in oscillations is339
