Usmg theionic conductivities of sorne cornrnon electrolytes and tetraalkylam.m.onium.halides, an attempthas been made to study ion-solvent interaction and solvation of ions. The results indicate thatwhile the common cations appear to have appreciable ion-solvent interaction and solvation,the anions and the tetraalkylam.m.onium.cations (R.N+) are unsolvated.ALTHOUGH several studies on conductivitiesof electrolytes in N ,N' -dimethylformamide(DMF) have been reported, a detailed study ofthe transport number of ions is still lacking. Prueand Sherringtonl measured the cationic transportnumber of KCNS in DMF at 25° while Paul andcoworkers2,8 determined the transport numbers ofLiCl, KCI, KCNS and NaCNS in DMF at 25° andobtained limiting transport numbers simply byintrapolating the t+ versus '\Ie curves to zeroconcentration; this is rather an unusual procedurefor the data at higher concentrations.Propylene carbonate (PC) is a liquid of recentinterest in which ion-solvent interaction and solva-tion studies appear to have received only scantyattention. Conductivities of a few common electro-lytes in proplylene carbonate (PC, D=64·92; ref.4), a solvent having a wide liquid range (-49'2° to241'7°), have been determined by a number ofworkers=". Mukherji et ai. reported' the cationictransport number of LiCl04 in PC at 25° from'EMF measurements.From this brief survey, it appears worthwhileto undertake a systematic study of the transportnumbers in these two liquids in order to obtainreliable ionic conductivities of some common electro-lyte and of tetraalkylammonium halides from theavailable electrolytic conductance data and aninsight into ion-solvent interaction and solvationof ions in them. The present paper reports thecationic transport numbers of KI at different concen-trations and temperatures in DMF and PC. Potas-sium iodide was found to be a suitable electrolytefor the present transport number studies on accountof the availability of the limiting electrolytic con-ductivity data in DMpo,ll and pC',9,12.Materials and MethodsAR grade KI was recrystallized twic~ fromconductivity water and dried in a vacuum desiccator.DMF (Fluka, purum) was purified as per standardprocedure'? and kept in dark-coloured bottles.80Electrical conductivity and density (30°) of thepurified sample were found to be 10-' ohrrr? cmlland 0·9436 g crrr" respectively (literature value-";d30=0'9445 g crrr").PC (Fluka, purum) was dried over freshly ignitedquicklime for several hours and then distilled underreduced pressure, the middle fraction of the distil-late being retained. The process was repeated untilthe electrical condu-ctivity of the purified samplewas reduced to about 10-7 ohm+ cms ; d25= 1·198 gcmos (literature value-": d!5= 1·999 g crrr").The transport number cell was similar to that ofMacInnes and Dole-"; electrodes used were of about1mm thick silver wire. Other equipment and theexperimental procedure were the same as describedearlier-e. Solutions were prepared in freshly distil-led solvents and kept overnight; a current of 2-5mA was passed for 7-10 hr from a 90 V battery ofdry cells. Changes in concentration of the iodideion were determined by conductometric titrationagainst silver nitrate solution. Due to slight solu-bility of silver iodide in DMF, formed at the anodeduring electrolysis, changes in concentration of themiddle and cathode compartments were determinedseparately and inter-checked. From the experi-mental data, thus obtained, the anionic transportnumber of KI was obtained in the usual mannerfrem which that of K+ ion was deduced. Usingthe values of the transport number of K+ ion atdifferent concentrations, the limiting transportnumbers, at different temperatures were obtainedemploying well known Longsworth's procedurew.For evaluating the Longsworth function, molalitywas converted into molarity from the density datadetermined side by side. The limiting conductivitydata and viscositv for DMP for PCll were takenfrom literature. "Viscosities of PC used were:t)!5=0'0248 (ref. 8), 1.40=0'0228, 1)35=0·0205 and1)45=0'0170 poise; the latter three were obtainedin this laboratory. The dielectric constant valuesused were of Bass et at.IS for DNF and of Pyne andTheodorou" for PC.RAM GOPAL & JHA: ION-SOLVENT INTERACTION & SOLVATION OF IONSResults and DiscussionThe transport numbers of K+ at different concen-trations and temperatures are given in Table 1.Although the transport number determinationpresented no special difficulty in either of thesolvents, KI was found to dissolve with difficultyin PC and only dilute solutions could be prepared.In both the solvents the transport number (1+)increased with the rise in temperature and decreasedwith the increase in concentration. The effect of tem-perature was consistent with Kohlrausch's law.Ionic conductivities - The limiting cationic trans-port number data, given in Table 1, have beenused to calculate the limiting ionic conductivitiesof K+ and 1+ from the available electrolytic conduc-tance data in DMP,lO and PCII,8,1l. The method of Robinson and Stokes-",as modified by Nightingale-e, has been used herefor estimating the solvation number of ions.Assuming that the tetraalkylammonium ions areunsolvated in DMF and PC, the Stokes radius 1',(=O·82!z/>.alJo) of these ions is plotted against thecorresponding crystal radius. 1', of the Rf,N+ ions.The curves so obtained in DMF and PC are givenin Figs. 1 and 2 respectively. The actual radiusI'HX of any smaller ion in solution can be read offfrom the knowledge of its 1',-value on the intra-polated part of the curve concerned. Positions ofsome ions are shown on the two curves; furtherdetails of the method are given elsewhere15,ll1.The molecular volumes of DMF and PC are takenas 115 and 127 As respectively. The solvationnumbers of some ions (which give an idea of theextent of ion-solvent interaction in solution) alongwith the respective 1', and I'HX values, are given inTable 3.Table 3 clearly shows that, in general, the smallercommon cations are appreciably solvated but theanions (and the R,N+ ions) are very little, if at all,solvated. This insignificant solvation of anionsin DMF and PC, in spite of the large dipole moment(>4D) of the solvent molecules, calls for some·Some workerslO-IIhave estimated the radii ("c) of theR,N+ ions which differ from those obtained by Robinsonand Stokes. Validity of the Stokes law in many aqueousand non-aqueous solvents has also been called into questionby others1i-17. It may be remarked that in all non-aqueous, protic and aprotic solvents of high dielec-tric constants, investigated so far, the positive endof the solvent dipole is invariably located inside themolecule and thus it is almost completely shieldedfrom direct interaction with the negatively chargedanions. In the aprotic solventslike DMF and PC, both the protons and the hydrogenbonding would be, more or less, missing. Thusthe factors which could induce anion-solventdipole interaction would be almost completelylacking in both these liquids and this results inweak solvation of anions. Strong electrostaticinteraction between the cations and the exposednegative end of the solvent dipole, situated on theoxyge~ atom of the >C=O group, leads to strongsolvation of the common cations; however, theR"N+ ions are too large to react strongly with thesolvent molecules.Acknowled~ementThe authors are grateful to the Society SigmaXi, USA, for financial assistance and to the LucknowUniversity for research facilities.
