Guapamacataro Center for Art and Ecology: Catalog from Summer Residency Session 2018

Abstract

This catalog represents some of the thinking and outputs from an interdisciplinary artists residency session at Guapamacátaro Center for Art and Ecology, Maravatío, MIchoacán, México from 18th May -11th June 2018. The Center is a site-based and community-oriented initiative where artists from different disciplines, scientists, educators and activists converge to foster culture, collaboration and sustainable development. Research inquiry manifested through exploration, arriving at understandings, communication and application of ecology through creative and interdisciplinary practices, beyond the preservation of “nature”. Biological factors were examined alongside the social, political and economic dimensions that make up the site specific ecosystem at large. Considerations included the local rural community, cultural factors and concerns and the physical environment which is rich in biodiversity but at risk of degradation. Artists facilitated workshops open to local people of all ages and demographics. Individual's and collaborative works including photography, video, sound, performance, textiles, drawing, sculpture and installation were presented on site in an exhibition event at the culmination of the residency period
