We provide a Fortran 77 version of the Applied Statistics Algorithm AS57 `Printing Multidimensional Tables'' originally appearing in the book `Applied Statistics Algorithms'' by P. Griffiths and I.D. Hill. We believe that the new code offers improvements both in readability and maintainability. [The file /pub/misc/statlib/apstat/as057.sh contains the Fortran 77 source code, example driver code, data and sample results as a Unix shar file. It is available via anonymous ftp from unix.hensa.ac.uk

PURPOSEThis routine is a Fortran  version of that appearing in Griths and Hill 	originally Haberman  It uses character variables rather than storingcharacter information in integers and reals which was the only way of implementing such an algorithm in standard Fortran  Where possible data statementshave been replaced by parameter statements The code has been restructuredand variable names have been altered to avoid clashes with Fortran ~~ intrinsicfunction names and the Fortran specier name UNIT The algorithm prints one or more NV ARdimensional parallel tables storedin an array TABLE of length NTAB For example TABLE might containa table of observations a table of tted values and a table of residuals To bespecic suppose that a threedimensional table fnijkg has been studied where  i     j     k   From this investigation a tted table fmijkgand a residual table frijkg have been derived For purposes of display it isdesired that the printed table have the format shown in Figure  In this caseTABLE is divided into three subtables as followsThe subtable corresponding to the observations fnijkg begins at TABLEthe subtable for the t fmijkg begins printing of the table the algorithm requires descriptiveinformation concerning the structure of the table and information which indicates how the table should be displayed The basic structural variables the categories of eachvariable and the names of the parallel tables In addition the title for the complete display is needed The character arrays TITLE V ARNAM  CATNAMand COLLAB provide these data All label arrays are declared to be assumedsize character arrays the variables TITLEN and LABLEN control how muchof each label is actually printed as well as the eld width used for output of thelabels Thus the rst TITLEN characters of each of the NT lines of the titleare output and the maximum length of any label is LABLEN characters Theinteger constant GAP see Adjustable constants below controls the amount ofspace inserted between a label and the following data values Of the NV ARlabels of V ARNAM  the last V ERT of them are printed on the lefthand sideof the page while NV AR  V ERT labels are printed along the top In theexample V ERT  The body of the table is printed by use of F conversion The format foran entry from parallel table J is Fab where a is LABLEN  GAP and b isDECJ The integer array DEC has length COLWhen many tables are to be printed it is sometimes useful to print severalsmall tables on the same page To permit this practice the user may use thevalue of the line counter LINE as returned by a prior call to TABWRT alongwith the argument RESTOR If RESTOR is set FALSE the table will beprinted space permitting within the remainder of the
