The fundamental link between graduate skills and employability was highlighted in the recent STEM degree provision and graduate employability Wakenham review (2016). It identified mismatches in expectations between bioscience higher education providers and industry, particularly in some areas such as commercial awareness. This presentation outlines an initiative we undertook as part of a programme to develop and embed wider employment concepts across the curriculum.  As part of this initiative a module called ‘Current Concepts in Biomolecular Sciences’ was developed at level 6. While this initially included signposting to enterprise and attempts to introduce enterprise through lectures, we felt that there was a need for a concrete exercise to bring it to life for the students and engage them directly in an enterprise activity. We introduced a discretionary, 5-mark bonus for anyone on the module who entered the university’s Bright Ideas competition. The initiative was supported by workshops from the Enterprise team, signposting to other resources and events, and encouragement to attend and develop their ideas through the university’s Bright Ideas programme. The presentation will outline the mechanisms used to develop the teaching initiative, and will provide a measure to the success achieved from running  the scheme over the past two years in terms of student feedback, engagement, recognition and achievement.  Please provide a summary of your abstract – maximum 50 words to be used in advertising the sessions and encouraging audience engagement We outline our strategy to narrow the gap between employers’ expectations and graduate capabilities. The strategy pursued embeds and promotes enterprise to bioscience students through the curriculum. It also encourages wider student engagement through an extra-curricular activity. Measures of success include module marks, student satisfaction ratings, and external recognition.
