Blockchain-based Data Synchronization for Product Catalogs in Distributed Systems

Abstract

Efficient collaboration between different project partners plays a vital role in construction projects and the achievement of project objectives. An option for implementing digital collaboration is the distributed system, where the same data and information are replicated on all nodes. A distributed system has advantages regarding data availability and scalability. Its shortcoming lies in synchronization of transactions in all nodes across the distributed network. The synchronization process should meet the following demands: data consistency, robustness against malicious attack, and transparency. Traditional methods for synchronization are not suitable to fulfill all requirements without high technical expenditure. This article presents the concept for a new synchronization process with blockchain technology, which updates the executed transactions and broadcasts them over the distributed network to all nodes automatically. This synchronization process ensures that the data remains consistent in all nodes of the system. With the consensus procedure and the cryptographic encryption of the blockchain technology, the data in the distributed system is also tamper-proof. By implementing blockchain for synchronization, collaboration in construction projects can be conducted with trust without having a single central authority
