Em meio a um cenário global de competição entre cidades e de marketing urbano para atrair turistas, empresas e investimentos estrangeiros, Porto Alegre abre as portas para o setor privado se instalar às margens do Guaíba com um megaempreendimento, o Pontal, na Ponta do Melo, local popularmente conhecido como Pontal do Estaleiro Só. Empreendimentos como este - que nesta pesquisa foi caracterizado como Grande Projeto Urbano (GPU) - são uma tendência global que ganham força na América Latina e no Brasil e estão modificando a paisagem e impactando a organização espacial das grandes cidades em uma escala e velocidade crescente. Nesta pesquisa, avaliamos a atual situação da Orla Central, a relação que a população mantém com esse espaço e, ao traçar as características e tendências dos GPUs através do referencial teórico, verificar a compatibilidade deste os tipos de usos que o frequentador da orla privilegia.In a global scenario of competition between cities and urban marketing to attract tourists, companies and foreign investments, Porto Alegre opens the door for the private sector to settle on the lake shore of Guaíba with a mega venture, Pontal, in Ponta do Melo, popularly known as Pontal do Estaleiro Só. Enterprises such as this one - which in this research was characterized as the Great Urban Project (GPU) - are a global trend gaining momentum in Latin America and Brazil and are changing the landscape and impacting the spatial organization of large cities at an increasing scale and speed. On this research, we evaluate the current situation of the central lake shore, the relationship that the population maintains with this space and, by tracing the characteristics and trends of GPUs through the theoretical framework, verify the compatibility of these types of uses that the regulars privileges
