It was elevated to a Medical Genetics Service(SGM) in 1996, and by the end of 2016, it celebrated its 35thanniversary. This is a tale of continued progress, groundedin the idea that patient care, education, and research growmore and grow better if they are developed in harmony.In the SGM/HCPA, several units of the Federal Uni-versity of Rio Grande do Sul state – UFRGS (Institute ofBiosciences, Institute of Basic Health Sciences, Faculty ofMedicine, Faculty of Pharmacy), and several postgraduateprograms (Biochemistry, Genetics, Medical Sciences,Child and Adolescent Health, and Pharmaceutical Sci-ences) have become intrinsically interconnected. Thisheterogeneous and plural composition, acting around thecentral theme “Medical Genetics,” became the brand of thegroup, which interacts transversally with numerous areas ofthe HCPA and has several associated sectors in the Experi-mental Research Center (Laboratory of Genetic Identifica-tion, Laboratory of Genomic Medicine, Gene Therapy Cen-ter, and Brain Laboratory) and the Clinical ResearchCenter.Thus, the different academic, technical, and scientificprofessionals involved in patient care activities, which havealways been the central axis of the mission of SGM/HCPA,received the support of undergraduate scientific initiationtrainees, MSc and PhD students, and postdoctoral fellowslinked to numerous projects of scientific and clinical re-search that were developed. In this virtuous circle, the dif-ferent components supported each other and resulted in avery impressive number of consultations, laboratory tests,clinical research protocols, scientific articles, and humanresource formation on various levels.A solid educational platform with several specializedcourses was progressively developed with an accreditedmedical residency program and a portfolio of differenttraining programs, which were highly demanded by profes-sionals from Brazil and abroad, like the Latin AmericanSchool of Human and Medical Genetics (ELAG). Special-ists and investigators from all corners of the world visitedSGM/HCPA and contributed with their experience and ex-pertise throughout these 35 years.The leadership position was also expressed by thepresidency of members of the SGM/HCPA in several sci-entific societies of this field (Brazilian Society of MedicalGenetics (SBGM), Latin American Society of Inborn Er-rors or Metabolism and Neonatal Screening (SLEIMPN),Latin American Network of Human Genetics (RELAGH),and Brazilian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biol-ogy (SBBq), among others, and by the promotion of memo-rable national and international events in the area. It wasalso expressed by hosting the headquarters of a National In-stitute of Science and Technology (National Institute ofPopulation Medical Genetics - INAGEMP) and the edito-rial team of an international scientific journal (Journal ofInborn Errors of Metabolism and Screening - JIEMS).Considered the most complete service of its kind inthe Latin American continent, it included the combined de-velopment of the main pillars of medical genetics (clinicalgenetics, cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, and molecu-lar genetics), while integrating it with specific programs(monitoring of birth defects, prenatal diagnosis, onco-genetics, neurogenetics, population medical genetics, andinformation and diagnostic networks), and with education,training and research activities.In 2004, the SGM/HCPA was designated by theWorld Health Organization as a Collaborating Center forGenetics and Molecular Biology, 42, 1(suppl), 153-154 (2019)Copyright © 2019, Sociedade Brasileira de Genética.
