A knowledge of alternator parameters and operational characteristics is a pre-requisite for any thorough assessment of performance or suitability for a particular application. Parameter values may be predicted prior to manufacture by traditional formulation with modification appropriate to 2 and 4 salient-pole configurations. After manufacture, parameter values may be determined via measurements taken during tests conducted in according with standard procedures specified by various national and international bodies. This paper describes how four quantities, Xd′, Xd″, Td′ and Td″, may be the determined from the three-phase short circuit test and if the short-circuit is sustained then a value for Xd may also be determined. For practical reasons, testing has been confined to small, medium-speed machines, but the techniques are far more widely applicable.</p
