This paper provides an overview of technological options for converting the energy content of biomass into higher forms, with particular emphasis on those options that have relevance for the existing or likely future business areas of the forest products industry. The options considered cover (1) boiler based and gas-turbine based heat and power plants, (2) upgraded fuels for boilers and kilns encompassing technologies such as pelletization, torrefaction, pyrolysis and gasification, and (3) upgraded fuels for the transportation sector encompassing both the synthesis-gas and bio-ethanol routes. In the overview, the developmental status of each technological option is outlined and the technical and economical feasibility of the option is discussed. Finally, a few general observations about business opportunities for the forest products industry are presented. It is concluded that the forest industry cluster is well positioned to develop new business based on the economically promising technologies identified in the overview
