Defoe, William Hendley, and Charity Still a Christian Virtue (1719)

Abstract

Argues against the attribution to Defoe of the tract 'Charity Still a Christian Virtue'. This patently high-church polemic is in a style impossible to associate with Defoe, and it seems hard to see why he should be regarded as the author when the Rev. William Hendley, with his printer and his publisher, were all arrested on 25 October 1719 for publication of the tract
