This paper presents three different cases where novel pilot scale surface treatment line has been used successfully to demonstrate three pre-commercial applications beyond traditional paper process concepts. The first application was based on replacement of traditional pigments in coatings by a thermoplastic starch pigment to create a smooth surface for printed electronics. The second application was based on an oxidizing reaction between an enzyme and a substrate to produce a colour reaction.
