An Analysis on the Destination of Law Leavers from Canterbury Christ Church University RESEARCH  TEAM:  BEN  WATERS,  ELLEN  GORDON ‐BOUVIER,  KOS  SIL IAFIS ,  TOM  MORTIMERSTUDENT  RESEARCH  ASSISTANT:   JAMES  MOHAJERResearch Rationale and Focus• League Tables ‐ Law at CCCU ranked very low in terms of  employability;• Our impression;• Understanding Employability in the graduate sense;• Our expectations;• Methodology and Analysis;• Summary of findings and further researchEmployabilityResearch considered:• What employability is;• What are the requirements of employers?• To what extent can a Law Degree achieve employability enhancement?• Gaps in the literature?• Assessment of University League Tables Guardian League Table Positions – Law 2010 2016Guardian League Table Positions – Law 2016Responses•Size of sample: 300 (incorporating 5 years of LLB/Legal studies graduates from 2010 to 2015)•Number of responses was 108 (36% response rate) Main Findings (1) – A Levels•Many legal employers will have a minimum A‐level requirement (ranging from BBC‐AAB minimum or 280‐340 UCAS points)•The majority of respondents had scores of between 240 and 300 UCAS points•Therefore, before even coming to university, some of our students may have already limited their career options in the legal sectorMain Findings (2) ‐ Employment•63% of respondents had found ‘graduate‐level employment’ within 6 months• 73% had obtained graduate‐level employment within 12 months. •53% of respondents are working in the legal sector, with 45% in the non‐legal sector (with 2% unemployed)•This compares to a reported graduate employment rate of 34‐40% in the league tables•National average UK employment (across all degrees) is 67% (HESA 2014/15)Graduates employed within 6 months Graduates employed within 12 monthsMain Findings (3) – Employability Skills•Source: Council for Industry and Higher Education •68% responded positively to the question of whether they felt their degree helped them to develop employability skills•The top 3 were: Intellectual Ability, Literacy and Analytical Skills, which are more academic skills•The bottom 3 (not including Numeracy) were: Team‐Working, Personality, and Integrity, which are more personality based skillsConclusions •There is a disparity between the league table information and the responses from our sample.  The league table information comes from the DLHE Survey (Destinations Leavers Higher Education)•CCCU law graduates fare significantly better than the league tables suggest.  Institutions with a similar employment rate include Brunel (65% and position 40) and Northumbria (64% and position 47) (Source: Guardian League Tables (Law) 2016)•Overall, a majority of graduates feel that the course develops employability skills, although there is room for improvement in respect of more ‘personality‐based’ skillsReasons for disparity and potential weaknesses•Law at CCCU is combined with other disciplines in the DLHE survey.  This could affect the figures.  •Students who were employed may be more likely to respond to the survey (this may be the same for the DLHE Survey)•We obtained a larger response than the DLHETaking the research forward•Useful open day and prospectus information •Responses regarding specific employability skills can inform curriculum development; module design can take into consideration the employability skills considered necessary•Further research; start a second stage of the project with current Year 1 cohort to identify career expectations and employability development throughout the course
