Dynamika systematycznego wzrostu, nowoczesna przestrzeń intelektu, labirynt znaków, magia zaangażowanych w swoją pracę ludzi z pasją – to tylko kilka haseł, które przychodzą na myśl, kiedy chcemy przywołać nazwę Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego i 70 lat jej historii. Łódź przed dwoma wiekami powstawała z tradycji niejednorodnych, i podobnie powstawał – jako mozaika różnych treści intelektualnych – Uniwersytet Łódzki.In these reminiscences the ex-director of The Library of Łódź University (1987–2005) describes his work of many years. The stages of Mr Janiak’s career from a library storekeeper to a director are described. Special attention is paid to the system of library work before computerization. The atmosphere at the Library as well as the friendly relations between people working there at that time are dealt with. Several people whose work at the Library was significant are recalled. The growing problem of the difficulty with space to store the books is discussed from the author’s point of view. Moreover, the stages of a long process of automatization as well as the conditions in which it was introduced, are presented. Many initiatives undertaken to erect a new building of the Library are also mentioned
