Although
the need to formalise the frames, in which within metropolitan areas in Poland exist, is often
articulated, nothing significant has happened in this matter for many years. Yet many local
communities related to big cities managed to oppose this obstacle and found their own ways
to institutionalise their co-operation. Lodz Metropolitan Area isn’t successful in this respect,
and that is the reason why this article was written. The author describes crucial issues refer-ring to delimitation and institutionalisation of Lodz Metropolitan Area, using the examples of
