At the Turn of Epochs? The Map of the Warklany Garden According to Count Michał Jan Borch (1753–1810)

Abstract

The article examines a literary representation of an amazing sentimental garden with reference to a real‑life park from the end of the 18th century, localised in the vicinity of a classicist residence of the Borch family in Warklany, in former Polish Livonia (nowadays Latgale in Latvia). Its author is Michał Jan Borch from Warklany (1753–1810), a famous Polish Livonian, bibliophile, mineralogist, collector, traveller and writer. The object of the analysis is the poem written in 1795 and titled Jardin sentimental du chateau de Warchland. An imaginary walk through the former estate of the count is made possible by a map, which not only shows central points of the route, but also draws attention to their symbolism. The author of the article attempts to present an interpretation of the text’s space based on cartographical projection, which was possibly intended by the poet himself.Teresa Rączka-Jeziorska – dr, pracę doktorską na temat Polsko‑inflancka literatura romantyczna obroniła na Uniwersytecie Śląskim w 2013 r.
