ETHN professor andfounding departmental chair AlbertoPulido envisioned and created the TurningWheel Project as a way to strengthen thefoundational ETHN principle that sources of truth and knowledge are rooted in the lives,experiences, and struggles of local communities.The spirit of the Turning Wheel Project is captured by its logo which is a pre-Columbiansymbol of Ollin. Ollin recognizes movement as a life-giving source that inspires thedynamic culture and community embodied by the mobile classroom concept. Honoringthe power of human agency and resilience, the Turning Wheel Project has participated innumerous community-relevant and community-based workshops, art exhibits,performances, and presentations since its inception. In addition, it actively collaborateswith many schools, museums, and community organizations in the region. ETHN Community SpotlightYasmeen Abushahla: Power,Justice & CommunityMy name is Yasmeen Abushahla, and I ama fourth-year student here at USD. Outsideof academics, I’m a member of the FilipinoUgnayan Student Organization and thedirector of Less Than Three Dance Club.Before taking any Ethnic Studies classes, Iviewed school and education ascompulsory instead of something to feelempowered through. I decided to major inEthnic Studies after taking Introduction toAsian American Studies in my very firstsemester at USD. This class opened myeyes to the vibrant histories ofmarginalized peoples in the United States.Ethnic Studies has given me a place to not only feel seen and understood, but alsosomewhere to be empowered and work towards helping others feel the same.Something that sets Ethnic Studies apart from other departments is the emphasis onengaging and working with our local communities. For example, this semester I'll beinterning with the California Innocence Project, a nonprofit that works to exoneratewrongly convicted individuals. The Ethnic Studies department has given me a unique,refreshing education and a community where I’ve found amazing friends and mentorsthat I look up to tremendously. I have found my passion through Ethnic Studies, and I amso grateful for this department.ETHN Community SpotlightKhea Pollard, Class of 2015:Transformative Knowledge =Transformative LeadershipIt feels like a lifetime since I've graduatedfrom USD with my undergraduate degreesin English and Ethnic Studies. I graduatedin 2015 and have since earned my master’sdegree in Nonprofit Leadership andManagement from USD, too. Majoring inEthnic Studies is a transformativeexperience for a person of color, becauseit teaches you to articulate and criticallyexamine your thoughts and feelings andconnect them in a meaningful way to what's happening around the globe. I utliize my education as a lens through which I lead. My Ethnic Studies training hasfortified my journey in public policy, advising an elected official in San Diego County for 5years, and it is the foundation from which I build my community work. In addition toworking as a policy advisor, I've opened a coffee shop cooperative called Cafe X: By AnyBeans Necessary. Understanding history, as told by the Black, Brown, and Indigenouspeople who experienced it, informs the way I choose to establish my business(cooperatively) with the goal of economic sustainability for disenfranchised communities.I couldn’t have chosen a better major for my passion, experience, and calling. It hasmeant a lot to me to still be connected to the incredible professors at USD who helpedme find myself in those early years. One thing is for certain: the bonds I’ve built throughthe Ethnic Studies Department have outlasted all other relationships during my 6 years atUSD.
