HUMAN DEVELOPMENT THROUGH THE LIFESPAN PSYC 201 The University of Montana-Missoula The College of Technology  Instructor: Heather L. Prerequisite: Introductory Psychology PSY 100s or PSYC 100s or equivalent transfer Introductory Psychology course or consent of instructor  Required Materials: Textbook Package: Development through the Lifespan by Laura E. Berk, 4th Edition. (Package includes Test and the following: 1.  Observation Video  2. Guide book 3. MYdevelopmentlab [contains the electronic text, practice tests, powerpoints, and a student study guide] ).   You will get this from the College of Technology BOOKSTORE  University of Montana online course website: courseware.umt.edu  Course Overview: The primary purpose of this course is to provide students with a broad overview of issues relevant to lifespan developmental psychology.  This course will provide opportunities to explore current scientific knowledge and theories, as well as provide “real life” advice on how to approach everyday developmental challenges.  Topics will include: enriching environments for infants, childrearing practices, working with adolescents, elder care, death, and bereavement .  Students are expect to think critically about the issues and to actively participate in class discussions.  The format of the course will rely on both lecture and discussion.  Course Requirements:  Class attendance and participation: Students are expected to attend class regularly and participate actively in class   discussions and activities.  Observations: Observations of human behavior are one requirement of the course.  Your course comes with an observational video that will allow you to observe these ages and complete lab sheets and then interpret those behaviors.  The lab booklet that comes with your text includes the materials we will use for observations.  You will not complete every page, however, so watch for specific sections to be assigned.  The lab booklet with assigned material will be collected a total of three (3) times throughout the course.  Late observation booklets will be docked 2 points per day late.  Assignments: Students are expected to turn in a total of three (3) assignments.  Details of these assignments are provided at the end of the syllabus.  Assignments will be collected at the beginning of class on the day in which they are due.  Students are expected to complete their own work.  Plagiarism will not be tolerated and result in failure of the assignment, at minimum, and will be reported to the Dean’s Office.  Late assignments will be docked 2 points per day late.  Course writing requirements: All papers are to be written as formal academic compositions.  Grammar and spelling are important as they can affect how ell you get your points across to the reader.  Double space, type, and use APA format.  Exams: There will be four (4) exams offered during the course of the semester.  All four (4) of the exams will be included on your final grade.  Exams will be primarily multiple choice with some true-false and matching questions.  Questions will be both applied/conceptual and factual in nature and cover material in the book as well as material presented in class.  Make-up exams will NOT be given except in documentable emergency situations.  Students who encounter such an emergency must contact the instructor PRIOR to the exam to make alternate arrangements.  Students who fail to contact the instructor prior to the exam to may (or may not) be allowed to make up the exam depending on circumstance and proof of the emergency situation.  Grading:    Observations: 3 @ 20 points each = 60 points  Assignments: 3 @ 30 points each=  90 points  Exams:     4 @ 50 points each = 200 points  Total:     350 points  Grade Breakdown: Grades are based in % of total points available.  If an assignment is deleted or altered, then the total will be adjusted accordingly. 315-350 points 90%-100%  A 280-314 points 80%-89% B 245-279 points 70%-79% C 210-244 points 60%-69% D 000-209 points 0%-59% F   Course Schedule: Dates and Topics are TENTATIVE and SUBJECT TO CHANGE.  It is your responsibility to attend class and hear of any changes to the schedule. All students must practice academic honesty.  Academic misconduct is subject to an academic penalty by the course instructor and/or a disciplinary sanction by the University.  All students need to be familiar with the Student Conduct Code.  The code is available for review online at http://www.umt.edu/SA/VPSA/index.cfm/page/1321.  2. Please note the last day to drop classes (see the website of University of Montana).  After this, no petitions to drop the course will be signed and no Incompletes will be given except in documentable emergency situations.  Note that course failure, in and of itself, does not constitute an emergency.  There will be no exceptions, so plan accordingly.  3. The instructor reserves the right to make changes to course requirements, assignment, the schedule, etc.  Any such changes will be announced in a reasonable time.  Students not attending class regularly may miss changes and it is not the responsibility of the instructor to inform such students.  4. Students with disabilities are responsible for declaring their disability to the instructor at the beginning of the semester if they require accommodations.  Such students are also responsible for arranging for any necessary accommodations with Disability Services for Students.  The instructor will work collaboratively with the student and DSS to provide these accommodations.  5. Departmental and University policies regarding Incompletes do not allow changing “incomplete” grades after one year has passed since the “I” was granted.
