TRANSVERSE SITUATED - in the field of tension between Stein and Krems

Zusammenfassung in englischer SpracheAbweichender Titel nach Übersetzung der Verfasserin/des VerfassersWährend Krems und Stein einerseits als Doppelstadt wahrgenommen werden und andererseits aus städtebaulicher Sicht auch für sich stehen, bildet sich eher unauffällig eine Art Zwischenstadt heraus, welche ursprünglich industriellen Charakter hatte und mittlerweile zunehmend der Bildung und Kultur gewidmet wird. Städtebaulich ist diese größtenteils dem Ort Stein an der Donau zuordenbar, dennoch haben die dort entstandenen Institutionen stets den Beinamen -Krems- - ein Indiz für die unklare Definition der Stadtgrenzen. Beginnend mit der Adaptierung der alten Tabakfabrik zur Donauuniversität Krems sowie zur Kunsthalle Krems, hat sich das gesamte Gebiet zu einer Art Bildungs- und Kulturzone mit weiteren Bauten dieser Richtung etabliert. Mit der erstmals direkten Anbindung an die Donau von Westen aus gesehen sowie dem Entré zu Stein und dem genannten Bereich, kommt dieser Zone große Bedeutung zu. Die Auslagerung der Kunst aus St. Pölten nach Krems soll wohl neben dem Bildungsschwerpunkt auch einen der Kunst setzen und mit der geplanten Anbindung der Kunstmeile an die Donau und Schiffanlegestelle auch den Tourismus fördern. In der entstehenden Zwischenstadt ist die Verbindung von Alt und Neu als wiederkehrendes Thema erkennbar. Alte industrielle Bauten gehen im Zuge von Adaptierungen und funktionalen Neubelegungen einen Dialog mit Neubauten ein. In diesem Sinne soll auch die neue -Galerie Niederösterreich- sich in das Gesamtgefüge eingliedern und einen neuen Baustein in der Entstehung der Zwischenstadt bilden.While Krems and Stein are perceived both as a twin city and for themselves at the same time, a kind of interim city is emerging rather inconspicuously, which originally had industrial character and is increasingly dedicated to the educational and cultural sector. Concerning urbanism, this interim city mainly belongs to Stein, though all the institutions founded there have the supplement "Krems" - an indication of the inexplicit definition of the city limits. Starting with the adaption of the old tobacco factory to the Danube University Krems and the Kunsthalle Krems, the entire area has established itself as a kind of educational and cultural zone. This zone is of great importance due to the first direct access to the Danube coming from the West as well as the Entrée to Stein and the above-named sector. The outsourcing of art from St. Pölten to Krems will probably also set a focus of the art in addition to the educational emphasis and promote tourism by planning the connection of the art district to the River Danube and harbor. In the developing intermediate city the combination of old and new as a recurring theme is evident. Old industrial buildings based on adaptation and functional redefinitions are establishing a connection to new buildings. According to this spirit, the new "Gallery of Lower Austria" is intended to fit within the overall structure and form a new element in the emergence of urban sprawl.13
