Abstract

Spiritual aspect often be made as a subject matter in an art work. The most basic element in a painting is communication that are used to deliver a certain message from the artist to the society or audience. The ‘spiritual’ term have a huge amount of definition according to the scholars. basically, spiritual can be understand as a feeling of kneeling towards God, a feeling of aesthetics in a soul, a feeling of the existence of other realm besides the earth and a feeling of an existence of other beings that are more superior than human. One cannot separate spiritual from religions like Islam, Christian, Hindu and Buddha. However, spiritual isn’t just referred to religion but it also has a branch in a way of thinking, traditions, daily rituals and beliefs. Paintings is one of the medium of preach for the artists to spread or deliver their beliefs or religions. Spiritual aspect in paintings usually be made as an icon which brings certain meanings. The meanings of the icon are then discovered by the iconographic approach. Iconography is a branch of knowledge which are used to explicit the meanings of a certain symbol or icon.
