  Open Access publications are digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. OER stands for Open Educational Resources, which are free and openly licensed educational materials that can be used for teaching and learning. Many UNH faculty use OER in their courses. Creative Commons licenses enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted work. A CC license is used when an author wants to give people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that they have created. A data repository is a system that can store, retrieve, and preserve research data and associated metadata/data documentation for the purpose of reuse. The Scholars’ Repository, a service of the University Library, is a collection of scholarly and creative works of University of New Hampshire faculty, staff, and students. The items included here have been selected by the library or deposited by academic departments, research institutes, and individual contributors. scholars.unh.edu   Unpaywall is a browser extension for Chrome or Firefox that helps you easily find free, legal, full-text copies of paywalled research articles. unpaywall.org.   The Open Access Button is a Firefox browser extension that helps you link to legal, full-text articles instantly. The service can also request articles from authors, and help them make the work available to everyone. openaccessbutton.org   The Digital Public Library of America is a collection of photographs, books, maps, news footage, oral histories, personal letters, museum objects, artwork, government documents, and more that are held by America’s libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage institutions. The materials are free and immediately available in digital format. https://dp.la/about    Internet Archive is a non-profit library of millions of free books, movies, software, music, websites, and more. https://archive.org/   Open Access Treats   A paywall requires payment from users in the form of a subscription or a fee in order to access content, such as a journal article. One textbook for one class can cost $200 or more and you often only use a few chapters. There are great free OER textbooks for many introductory courses. Public tax dollars and/or your tuition money pay for research, but you may be asked to pay $35 or more to access an article if your library cannot afford a subscription. (Tip: use Interlibrary Loan instead of paying article fees) Some of the big academic publishers have profit margins of 30% or more. For comparison, Walmart’s profit margin is around 3%. Researchers and peer-reviewers, who do all the research, writing, and reviewing of articles don’t get paid by journals to do this work. Developing countries could benefit from access to scientific discoveries, but are blocked by paywalls. Doctors and patients lack access most up-to-date medical knowledge because their health centers can’t afford the extremely high subscription rates of many academic journals. Hiding research behind paywalls can slow down innovation and entrepreneurship, keeping the latest technological discoveries in the hands of the few who can afford to pay. Limited access to research results and data can slow the progress of scientific discovery.  The good news is that libraries and researchers are working toward a more equitable and open publishing system!
