In this article, we analyze the tale “Dois homens”, from Luís Vilela ‘s collection Tremor de terra, in order to identify contemporary subject marks and the functioning of dialogue and silence from a narrator troubled by the silence of two guys sitting at a bar table. Based on issues pertinent to Vilela’s narrative characteristics, we look at the functioning of dialogue and silence in his works. For that, the theoretical contribution of Bakhtin (2018), Paz (2015), Ricoeur (2014), Santiago (1989), Ferreira (2018) and others were fundamental.Neste artigo, realizamos uma análise do conto “Dois homens”, da coletânea Tremor de terra, de Luiz Vilela, no fito de identificar marcas do sujeito contemporâneo e o funcionamento do diálogo e do silêncio a partir de um narrador incomodado com o silêncio de dois indivíduos sentados em uma mesa de bar. Apoiados em questões pertinentes às características narrativas de Vilela, atentamos para o funcionamento do diálogo e do silêncio em suas obras. Para tanto, foram fundamentais o aporte teórico de Bakhtin (2018), Paz (2015), Ricoeur (2014), Santiago (1989), Ferreira (2018), entre outros
