The state of contemporary Internet lexicography (the case of the entries "term" and "terminology" in general English monolingual dictionaries)

Abstract

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie i ocena, zwłaszcza pod względem poziomu informacyjności, współczesnej internetowej leksykografii jednojęzycznej. Ze względu na ciągłość tradycji, stałość finansowania oraz stopień zaawansowania podstawą materiałową dociekań stały się hasła "term" oraz "terminology", pochodzące z profesjonalnych słowników języka angielskiego, amerykańskiego oraz brytyjskiego. W wyniku analiz stwierdzić można, że pod względem zawartości informacyjnej słowniki ogólne starają się osiągnąć ideał opracowania referencyjnego, zawierającego wszystkie oczekiwane przez czytelnika dane językowe. Możliwości programów przeszukujących korpus oraz bazę danych słownika wpływają na dodawanie sekcji zawierających hasła nietrywialnie powiązane z hasłem wyjściowym. Ze względu na szeroki zasób zamieszczanej w opracowaniach leksykograficznych wiedzy postulowane jest lepsze porządkowanie danych, zwłaszcza na podstawie rozwijających się badań nad zachowaniem użytkowników słowników.The objective of this paper is to present and evaluate the contemporary monolingual Internet lexicography, particularly in terms of its level of informativeness. Due to the continuity of tradition, stability of financing and level of progress, the entries "term" and "terminology", derived from the professional British and American English dictionaries, will provide material for this reflection. Studies have shown that, in terms of their information content, general dictionaries aspire to become perfect reference works, that contain all of the linguistic data expected by the reader. The use of software, for searching the corpus and dictionary databases, enables adding new sections containing non-trivial entries, related to the basic entry. Due to the broad spectrum of the knowledge covered by lexicographic works, a better organisation of data is needed, especially based on the evolving research, concerning the behaviour of dictionary users
