Dinner Dress, Optional - --~ THE purpose in establishing a Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs on the University of Minnesota Canlpus is to create in honor of Senator Humphrey a major center for the recruitment, stimulation, and education of highly promising young men and women for public life. We believe we will at the same time per-petuate the innovative, creative, and humane approach to public life so well exem-plified by the career of Senator Humphrey. The Institute will be dedicated, as well, to a concern for the quality of Ameri-can public life and to a wiser and broader participation in public policy by the citizenry at large. Finally, the Humphrey Institute . will be so structured that it may re-orient its programs as necessary to deal with the inevitable change in our society and with the em·ergence of new problem areas in the public sector. Therefore, the very character of the Institute will reflect one of the singular qualities Senator Humphrey has displayed in his long career - that of a mind constantly open to new concepts and eager to come to grips with new problems. Humphrey has served the people of Minnesota and iQe Unite_d States as an elected public officjal,_ a leader Qf_his pQliti-cal party, and a spokesman for the highest ideals of the American system of de-mocracy. Senator Humphrey is one of the most loved and respected figures in public life. He is a man who has, in the words of a recent Washington Post editorial, "barnstormed his way into the hearts of people everywhere" through his "energy and exuberance" and his "unabashed joy of politics and people." As a tribute to Senator Humphrey's historic contribution to government, to his faith in the decency in good will of the American people, and to the indomitable spirit that he has exhibited during his recent illness, the Minnesota State Society is privileged to host a dinner and evening of entertainment to honor Senator Humphrey and to support the effort to create a Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. We hope you will be able to join many of Senator Humphrey's friends in a personal tribute to him at the Washington Hilton Hotel on October 20, 1977.
