PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE As I w r i t e t h i s l e t t e r , I h a v e j u s t returned from Washington, D.C. where the Academy held another successful annual c o n v e n t i o n ( A u g u s t 9 ) . As u s u a l , t h e American Accounting Association conven-tion (August 10-12) followed our meet ing and the Beta Alpha Psi convention (August 7-8) preceded the Academy meeting. Many tour members attended not only our meet-ing but one or both of the other meetings. These three meetings in the same city, one following the other, are the usual occur-rence and vividly symbolize the dynamic interaction between the Academy and the other two organizations. As I have read the recent his tor ies of both organizations (the AAA Histories by Dale Flesher and Terry Sheldahl and Beta A lpha Psi h is tory by Ter ry Sheldahl ) , I have been impressed by how each organiza-tion reached a point where in order for the organization to progress further each had to establ ish a pe rmanen t office and hire an adminis t ra tor . Both organizat ions did so and have literally flourished ever since. As y o u r p r e s i d e n t , I b e l i e v e t h e Academy now needs to consider this issue. This is whether we should set up a perma-n e n t office and h i r e an a d m i n i s t r a t o r . Presumably if such an office is opened (and an administrator hired), Sarasota would be the site in order to maintain and improve our relationship wi th these two organiza-t ions . I would appreciate receiving your views on this subject. A related subject is whether we should maintain the present structure of our orga-nization or whether we should change to a Beta Alpha Psi type relationship wi th the Association or possibly even section status w i t h the Associat ion. Inves t iga t ion may demonstrate that not all these options (or possibly others) are realistic. Certainly as 2 your president, I was very conscious of the c o n t i n u e d l o n g - t e r m d e v o t i o n t o t h e Academy shown once again at the conven-tion by the secretary, the treasurer, the edi-tors, the research center directors, the pres-iden t -e lec t , the found ing p re s iden t and many t rustees inc lud ing our chief fund-raiser. But I do have the dist inct impres-sion t h a t we have often exp lo i t ed t he i r devotion even to the extent that their uni-versities are absorbing financial costs that should be borne by the Academy. This was also the experience of both the AAA and Beta Alpha Psi before they set up perma-nent offices. Two nominees for office who have not been previously active at a national level were introduced at our Washington meet-ing. Both are prominent scholars and wide-ly known. A nominee to eventually assume the position of secretary is Professor Doris Cook, Univers i ty of Arkansas . Professor J a m e s D o n E d w a r d s , U n i v e r s i t y of Georgia, will be serving as a vice president. W e welcome them in their new leadership roles. Special recognition should be given to Sharon M o o d y , G e o r g e W a s h i n g t o n University, who managed most ably, in her i n i t i a l effort , t h e A c a d e m y E x h i b i t in Washington, D.C. Finally, I encourage our membership to a t t e n d o u r r e s e a r c h c o n f e r e n c e n e x t N o v e m b e r 20 -21 in C o l u m b u s , O h i o at the Hi l ton Nor th -Wor th ing ton Hotel . The registrat ion fee for the conference is $75 per ind iv idua l . Rooms m u s t be reserved directly wi th the hotel. The theme of the conference is "U.S. A c c o u n t i n g His to ry : 1 9 6 5 - 1 9 9 0 . T h e f o r m a t w i l l be o ra l h i s t o r y c o n -ducted in group discussion by prominent continued on page 3 The Accounting Historians Notebook, Fall, 1992 1Burns: President's message [1992, Vol. 15, no. 2]Published by eGrove, 1992TYSON RECEIVES THE MANUSCRIPT AWARD Professor Thomas Tyson was presented with the 1992 Vangermeersch Manuscript Award at the First Annual Academy Reception held in Washington, D.C. on August 9. This annual award is one of the programs of the Academy established to encourage young accounting scholars to pursue historical research. The call for par-ticipation in the 1993 award program is included in this issue of The Notebook. Tom is Associate Professor of Accounting at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York. He is a Certified Management Accountant and an Enrolled Agent with the Internal Revenue Service. Tom has more than seven years of experience as an industrial accountant. Dr. Tyson earned his doctorate degree in Accounting from Georgia State University, a Master of Business Administration from New Mexico State Univers i ty , and a Masters in Counseling Education from the University of Pittsburgh. Tom has published articles in a variety of academic and professional journals which include The Accounting Historians Journal, Issues in Accounting Education, The Journal of Business Ethics, and Management Accounting. Certificate of Merit Awards were received for two of his articles in Management Accounting. President: continued from page 2 accountants. There will be three major ses-sions, each one from a different perspective, academic, industrial, and professional. Each session will be video taped and recorded. The special participants at the conference include many Hall of Fame members and other prominent accountants. The academics include: Robert Anthony (Harvard), Nor ton Bedford (Illinois), Sidney Davidson (Chicago), Chuck Horngren (Stanford), Yuji Ijiri (Carnegie), Maurice Moonitz (Berkeley), and David Solomons (Wharton). Steve Zeff (Rice) will moderate the first session. The second ses-sion, which is the industrial perspective, will consist of Chief Financial Officers of major corporations and will be moderated by James Don Edwards (Georgia). The third session on the profession will consist of leading professionals of the Big Six, the current or former managing partner. We encourage you to attend. It should be an historic occasion. The Academy's annual business meeting will be held on Sunday morning at the same hotel on November 22. Saturday afternoon will be devoted to the annual University of Michigan football game with Ohio State. Ticket scalping is not illegal in Columbus. Again, we hope you can attend. Thomas J.
