It brings together the researchers studying thefundamental and engineering aspects of laser technologiesalong with their applications in various areas, includingbiophotonics.The ALT conference has become a well-recognized meet-ing for laser physicists, engineers, and end users from hospi-tals and clinics. The latest in the ALT series of meetings washeld in Galway, Ireland, September 12–16, 2016, and the nextone took place in Busan, Korea, September 10–15, 2017.It is always difficult to pick highlights when no one can seeall of the presentations, but here follow some worth mention-ing. Francesco Pavone (LENS) gave a stimulating talk on theuse of photonics to elucidate brain function, including the hab-its we have, which become hardwired over time. He illustratedthis with a colorful example of cultural differences betweenthe north and south of Europe. Being more organizedbrings many benefits, but apparently it reduces the ability toadapt and cope with less usual circumstances. There is agreat need for deep-tissue high-resolution and ideally spectro-scopic imaging to drive the translation of new therapies, suchas stem cell, to the clinic. Little is known about where theygo and what stem cells, exosomes, and similar agents dodeep in the body, because there is no technology with thesensitivity and resolution to quantify this. Stefan Andersson-Engels outlined novel and futuristic proposals for deep-tissueimaging including focused ultrasound–modulated optical im-aging and perhaps more futuristic quantum entanglement.This special section presents selected papers mostly fromthree key topics of ALT-16: biophotonics, photoacoustics, andsensors. All papers submitted to this special section under-went rigorous peer review. It includes two invited papers,one by Marco Andreana et al. discussing an epi-detectinglabel-free multimodal imaging platform using a compactdiode-pumped femtosecond solid-state laser, and Rinat O.Esenaliev’s paper describing optoacoustic diagnostic modal-ity of different stages from idea to clinical studies with highlycompact laser diode–based systems. Both are open accesspapers.A photoacoustic imaging and spectroscopy probe fordetecting lymph nodes and spreading of cancer at variousdepths is presented in the paper by Yong-Jae Lee et al.Optical coherence tomography (OCT) technologies are pre-sented in the papers by Ruchire Eranga Wijesinghe et al.in application to agriculture problems, specifically to analyzegermination rate of Capsicum annum seeds treated withgrowth-promoting chemical compounds, and by ManmohanSingh et al. for the evaluation of customized riboflavin/UV-A corneal collagen crosslinking treatment with an OCTelastography technique.The axial tomography in live-cell laser microscopy with useof green fluorescent protein (GFP) and quantum dots (QDs) isdescribed by Verena Richter et al. Low-frequency vibrationalspectroscopic studies of proteins with different secondarystructures using FT-IR spectroscopy were performed byIrina Balakhnina et al., and Raman spectroscopy was usedby Elena Timchenko and co-workers for assessment ofdecellularization of heart bioimplants. Sónia Carvalho et al.presented a comparative study between glucose diffusionin normal and cancerous colorectal mucosa using anoptical clearing method. They quantified glucose and freewater diffusion, as well as balance of free/bound water inthese tissues. In the paper by Janis Spigulis et al.,the smartphone snapshot mapping of skin chromophoresunder triple-wavelength laser illumination is presented. Theauthors used an RGB color model in their studies. ArkadyAbdurashitov and coauthors presented a robust techniqueon off-axis holographic laser speckle contrast measurementsfor imaging of blood vessels in tissues. The paper by KisungLee is devoted to red blood cell (RBC) optical trapping withina microfluidic channel to provide assessment of the “cross-bridge”–induced interaction of RBCs. The paper by SandraBustamante López and Kenith Meissner is also devoted toRBC characterization, in particular for biosensing applicationsby using luminescence and atomic force microscopy. Opticalsensing for pathology recognition is discussed in the paper byMaria Fátima Domingues et al. on the basis of insole opticalfiber Bragg grating sensor network for dynamic vertical forcemonitoring.An invited paper by Emil Sobol et al. is related to the devel-opment of precise laser technologies for therapeutics. Theystudied laser-induced micropore formation and modificationof cartilage structure in the course of osteoarthritis healing.This collection of papers gives some idea of ALT meetingresearch topics. We thank all contributors to this specialsection on Advanced Laser Technologies for Biophotonics.Martin Leahy completed a DPhil at the University of Oxford. He is anadjunct professor at the Royal College of Surgeons, Fellow of theInstitute of Physics, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Medicine inIreland, and Fellow of SPIE. He is a cochair, executive organizingcommittee member, and panel moderator for SPIE Photonics WestBiOS in San Francisco; editorial board member of the Journal ofBiomedical Optics; and host of the BioPIC European Bioimagingconference. Since 2010 he has delivered more than 20 internationalinvited lectures and published more than 40 ISI journal articles. He iscurrently chair of applied physics at NUI Galway and was elected tothe Council of the Royal Microscopical Society in 2015.Tia Keyes is a professor (chair) of physical chemistry at the School ofChemical Sciences, Dublin City University, where she has been amember of faculty since 2002. She is an academic member of theNational Centre for Sensor Research and is a Fellow of the Instituteof Chemistry of Ireland and of The Royal Society of Chemistry. She isauthor/coauthor of approximately 200 peer-reviewed publications ininternational journals and has supervised/cosupervised 27 PhDs tocompletion to date.Valery V. Tuchin is a professor and head of optics and biophotonicsat Saratov National Research State University and several other uni-versities and institutions. His research interests include tissue optics,laser medicine, tissue optical clearing, and nanobiophotonics. He is afellow of SPIE and OSA, has been awarded Honored Science Workerof Russia, SPIE Educator Award, FiDiPro (Finland), Chime Bell Prizeof Hubei Province (China), and Joseph W. Goodman Book WritingAward (OSA/SPIE). He is the recipient of the 2016 NanQiang LifeScience Series Lectures Award of Xiamen University, China.Alexander V. Priezzhev graduated and received his PhD degreefrom the Faculty of Physics, Lomonosov Moscow State University(MSU) in 1971 and 1975, respectively. He has led and participatedin various national and international research projects on medicalphysics and biomedical optics. He is head of the Laboratory ofLaser Biomedical Photonics, Faculty of Physics, and InternationalLaser Center, MSU.
