Abstract
Članek govori o kritiki muzejev in muzejskih razstav (mask) z vidika (etnološke) muzeologije.

The paper presents some critical remarks of museums and museum exhibitions on masks from the perspective of ethnological museology. Emphasized is the purpose of modern museums as transmitters of knowledge and guardians and generators of culture. Discussed are certain museological concepts and the manner of presenting exhibitions on masks in European museums. The author suggests that the wealth of masking traditions, on display in museums, has been minimalized to aesthetic and morphological mask forms, but devoid of any ritual characteristics that are an essential part of traditional Shrovetide customs. Upon seeing the exhibited objects that have been rendered to the level of fetishes in order to convey an idealized view of reality visitors acquire a false notion about the role and importance of traditional masks in the history of world civilizations
