Abstract
El artículo reconstruye a partir de testimonios contemporáneos, las experiencias cotidianas y sus impresiones respecto de éstas de las tropas chilenas en los campamentos instalados en el Desierto de Atacama entre noviembre de 1879 y abril de 1880, mientras se desarrolló la Guerra del Pacífico. Se estudian las estrategias desplegadas por los soldados para sobrevivir en un ambiente hostil, alimentarse, habitar, distraerse y honrar a sus camaradas caídos en combate.The article reconstructs, based on contemporary testimonies, the daily experiencesof the Chilean troops and their impressions in the camps installed in theAtacama Desert between November of 1879 and April of 1880, while the War of thePacific was taking place. It studies the strategies deployed by the soldiers to survive ina hostile environment, feed themselves, inhabit, distract and how they honored theircomrades fallen in combat
