In vitro evaluation of apical sealing in root apex retrofilled with MTA and zirconium pins [MTA ve zirkonyum pinlerle yapılan retrograd dolguların apikal sızdırmazlıklarının in vitro olarak degerlendirilmesi]

Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this in-vitro study was to evaluate the apical sealing in root apex retrofilled with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and zirconium pins by means of fluid filtration test. Materials and Methods: In this study, 24 human single-rooted teeth were used. The root canals were instrumented to 50 file apical enlargement. All teeth except positive control group filled with gutta percha and AH plus root filling material. Two teeth in the positive control group filled only with gutta percha. The root apex of two teeth in the negative control group was covered with two layers of nail polish. The apical 3mm of the samples were cut by using diamond saw perpendicular to axis of teeth. The retrograde cavities were prepared by using ultrasonic tips in 5mm depth. The specimens were randomly divided into two groups of 10 samples. In MTA group, retrograde cavities were filled with MTA. In zirconium group, zirconium pins which were prepared at the same size of ultrasonic tips were placed into the retrograde cavities with digit pressure after the cavities were retrofilled with MTA. The teeth were prepared for microleakage test with fluid-filtration method. Measurements of fluid movement were made at 2-min intervals for 8 min and means of these measurements were recorded. Results: There was not statistically significant difference between two groups in terms of apical microleakage (p=0.91). Conclusions: In this study, using of MTA material with zirconium pins as retrograde material showed similar results with using of MTA alone when apical sealing was evaluated. It was planned to provide better apical seal by enforcing MTA withzirconium pins. It is suggested to conduct further studies to evaluate the zirconium pins used with different materials which simplifies the retrograde filling procedure
