Son 30 yıl boyunca bu hücre ölüm tipi oldukça geniş bir şekilde araştırılmış ve bu hücre intiharının altında yatan moleküler mekanizmalar açıklanmıştır. Apoptozisin çok az ya da çok fazla olması hematolojik bozukluklar, otoimmün hastalıklar, nörodejeneratif hastalıklar, iskemik hasar ve birçok kanser türü gibi durumları içeren önemli bir etmendir.
