PHAR 514 - Pharmacy Ethics Fall, 2001 MW 1310-1430 Room:  SB 336        Instructors: Tim Stratton, Ph.D., R.Ph., ext. 2339, timstrat@selway.umt.edu   (Course Coordinator)   Lori Morin, R.Ph., MBA, ext. 4080, morin@selway.umt.edu  Course description:  Conducted in seminar format, students in this University of Montana Ethics Core Course will review ethical traditions and schools of thought, and apply these principles as they discuss and debate ethical dilemmas in health care and pharmacy practice.  Course goals:  Upon completion of this course, students will be able to utilize critical thinking skills and apply the ethical traditions and principles of, but not limited to, Aristotle, Kant and Mill to analyze ethical dilemmas in health care and pharmacy practice scenarios.  Students will also be able to evaluate their own ethical beliefs, argue both sides of an ethical issue using different ethical traditions, justify their recommended courses of action using different ethical traditions, and demonstrate tolerance for opinions which differ from their own.  Course objectives:  Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain how the following ethics concepts apply to pharmacy practice situations:  agency, autonomy, causality, consequentialism, deontology, duty, imperatives, justice, liberty, responsibility, rights, utilitarianism and virtue theory.  Learning approaches:  Faculty presentations, written assignments and classroom discussions/debates will all be utilized.  Grade determination:  Grades will not be based upon a student’s ethical position on any issue.  Rather, grades will be determined by the student’s ability to identify a case’s ethical concerns, address both sides of each issue identified and apply different ethical traditions and principles to defend their personal position on each issue.  Six take-home written case analyses will constitute the written exams for the course.  Students will have the opportunity to discuss each case in class before the assignment’s due date.  Each student paper will be identified only by a sequential number (1 to n) selected by the student.  Students will be responsible for retaining the code key until after an assignment has been graded.  On each written assignment, 60% of the grade will be based on  the above criteria, and 40% will be based upon the quality of the student’s writing.  Each student may drop the lowest score of the first five assignments.  All students must complete the final exam case.  In addition to written assignments, students will be graded on the quality of their participation in individual and group discussions/presentations, and by the quality of their participation as audience members during presentations by others.  (continued on other side) Groups of three students will present one student-generated case assigned by the instructor.  The group will be expected to identify and lead a discussion about all issues in the case.  Attendance is expected at every class session; students anticipating having to miss a class session should contact one of the instructors beforehand.  Five (5) points will be deducted for each unexcused absence.  Late assignments will be subjected to a 10% penalty for each day an assignment is overdue.  Point Distribution:  Written case analyses, 2-page limit (5 @ 50 points    each – 30 points content; 20 points writing and grammar)  250 points Final written case, 4-page limit     (50 points content; 25 points writing and grammar)     75 points  Participation -scenario presentation         25 points  -scenario discussions         25 points  -lecture topic discussions      25 points Total points possible       400 points A = 90-100% of possible points B = 80-89% of possible points C = 70-79% of possible points
