???????The Lord’s Prayer and the Doxology? ? ??AbstractThe Lord’s Prayer of the Protestant churches includes the doxology whereas that of the RomanCatholic Church does not. Now, where does that difference come from? And, is there any theologicalsignificance in that difference?The Lord’s Prayer is based on Chapter?, Verses??? of the Gospel according to Matthew andmany of the modern versions of the Bible do not have the words of doxology in that passage.However, Luther’s translation and the King James Version did have those words of doxology in thesame passage, for the biblical translators in the Reformation period used the Greek New Testamentedited by Erasmus and it had the doxology following the Lord’s Prayer. Protestant leaders taught theLord’s Prayer as was written in their Bible. In fact, Erasmus used a lot newer manuscripts than thosethat Jerome, who translated the Vulgate, had used. The Vulgate does not have the doxology andmodern biblical scholars widely agree that the original Gospel according to Matthew did not have thedoxology following the Lord’s Prayer.Thus the Lord’s Prayer of the Protestant churches accidentally came to have the doxology.
