Biology and ecology of the mediterranean population of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta)

Abstract

The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) is one of the two species of sea turtles that breed in and permanently inhabit the Mediterranean sea. During their long life, members of the Mediterranean population reside in the Mediterranean Sea where they feed, reproduce and migrate between the oceanic and the neritic zone. They nest almost exclusively in the eastern Mediterranean on the sandy beaches of Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, and Lybia. They often get injured due to entanglement in the fishing nets and ingestion of marine debris, mostly plastics. Thanks to their many roles in the ecosystem, the loggerhead sea turtles are the subject of different conservation and protection conventions, actions and programmes
