NOTES AND ANNOUNCEMENTSMESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF SMFSDear Members and Subscribers,We have good news: the MLA has approved the application of the SMFS forallied organization status. Beginning with the 1998 convention in San Francisco,the SMFSwill be able to arrange no more than two sessions per MLAconvention. All participants in our programs must be members of the MLA ormust join by 1 April, 1998.For 1998 the SMFSwill organize two sessions, with topics sufficiently broad toaccommodate a range of papers on medieval language, textual culture andgender. Topics and organizers will be announced in a separate mailing in mid-January. The MLA's deadline for abstracts is 15 March, 1998,although earliersubmissions are encouraged!Many thanks to Sarah Stanbury, who pursued this affiliation on the Society'sbehalf!Thanks to all. F.
