In Valencia, during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, the water users´ associations and the
Ayuntamiento de Valencia underwent through a fierce conflict. The revision of the legal concession
of water diverted from the Turia River for urban uses brought a strong reaction from the
agricultural users, which promoted an unprecedented social mobilization and provoked the major�s
resignation. The conflict between huerta and city is an interesting indicator of the politicization
of Valencian society in the first third of the twentieth century and also of the power of symbolic
capital to boost social action. The present article describes and analyzes this conflict, which shows
the strong pressure over water resources in the starting stages of river regulation processes in the
Spanish Mediterranean basins.En la Huerta de Valencia, en el periodo de la dictadura de Primo de Rivera, se produjo un enconado
enfrentamiento entre las comunidades de regantes y el Ayuntamiento de Valencia. Una revisión
concesional para legalizar unas detracciones del Turia efectuadas regularmente para el abastecimiento
de la población fue suficiente para que los regantes efectuaran una movilización social sin
precedentes y acabaran provocando la dimisión del alcalde de Valencia. El conflicto entre huerta y
ciudad es un buen indicador de la politización de la sociedad valenciana del primer tercio del siglo
XX y de la capacidad de movilización social del capital simbólico. El presente artículo describe y
analiza este conflicto, que pone de relieve la intensa presión sobre los recursos en los momentos
previos a la regulación fluvial de las cuencas mediterráneas
