Civilization and barbarism : two interpretations of the lettered role in the view of the modernizing project in Latin America : Sarmiento and Martí

Abstract

Se analizan las concepciones de Domingo Faustino Sarmiento y José Martí acerca del rol letrado en el programa modernizador de América Latina durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Para ello se adopta como eje la divergente significación de las categorías "civilización/barbarie" en los textos Facundo y Nuestra América. Una nueva lectura de estos textos fundacionales de la historia intelectual latinoamericana permite reconocer aspectos críticos muchas veces olvidados por la reconstrucción del discurso letrado en las actuales corrientes de los estudios latinoamericanos.The concepts of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento and José Martí about the lettered role in the modernizing program in Latin America during the second half of the XIXth Century are reviewed. To do so, the divergent meaning of the categories «civilization/barbarism» in Facundo and Nuestra América are taken as the central axis. A new reading of these fundamental texts of Latin American intellectual history allows us to recognize critical aspects many times forgotten by the reconstruction of the lettered discourse in the present– day currents of Latin American studies.Fil: Olalla, Marcos.
