La literatura de cordel conoció una amplia difusión por las plazas y caminos de España a lo largo del siglo XVIII. Estas narraciones no sólo constituían un divertimento para su público, sino que también ofrecían diversos modelos de comportamiento o normas imitables acordes con los valores y las “buenas costumbres” de la época. En relación con las imágenes del matrimonio que los romances divulgaban, esa implícita voluntad moralizadora se hacía más evidente, dada la importancia de esta institución para el mantenimiento del orden social, y se dirigía de modo predominante hacia las mujeres, sobre las que se cargaba el peso de la prosperidad de la relación conyugal. El análisis de estas representaciones y de su interacción con las prácticas sociales de su tiempo puede enriquecer nuestra comprensión sobre las transformaciones y pervivencias culturales que en torno al modelo conyugal y familiar se desarrollaron en la España del siglo XVIII.The “literatura de cordel” was widely read throughout Spanish plazas and roads during the 18th century. These narratives not only constituted a form of entertainment for their audience, but they also offered various models of behavior or imitative norms in harmony with the values and “good customs” of the period. Due to the importance of the institution of marriage for maintaining social order, an implicit moral will was made more evident in connection with the images of marriage that these romances revealed, and was predominately aimed at women, who carried the burden of prosperity in a marital relationship.
