From Avila to Rome, from Rome to Cuzco: a colonial painting of Saint Teresa and the ¿concentrated holiness¿

Abstract

Este trabajo aborda el estudio de la representación de Santa Teresa de Jesús en una pintura anónima realizada en Cuzco en la primera mitad del s. XVIII con el fin de contribuir a despejar algunos aspectos particulares de la construcción de santidad en la trama histórica y cultural de la América colonial. Se tendrán en cuenta, además del examen de la pieza, su relación con sus posibles fuentes grabadas en el marco de las características de la producción pictórica en los talleres cuzqueños, y se propondrá que la pintura responde a las exigencias de una comitencia que buscaba disponer, para la devoción privada, de una imagen de ¿santidad concentrada¿.This paper presents a study on the representation of Saint Teresa of Child Jesus in an anonymous painting made in Cuzco in the first half of the 18th Century, with the aim of clarifying some peculiar aspects of the construction of the holiness in that historical and cultural context. Apart from the artwork itself, this paper analyzes its relationship with some possible sources found in contemporary engravings, that are part of the characteristics of the pictorial production of Cuzco¿s workshops. It is suggested that the painting could have been commissioned by a client for his private devotion in orden to obtain an image of ¿concentrated holiness¿.Área de Historia del Arte, UP
