Euquercus, Section Cerris) (Camus,1938). The Tabor oak is generally consideredas a deciduous tree (Zohary, 1973; Davis,1982), yet Ne'eman (1993) regards this oakrather as semi-deciduous since somepopulations are characterized by a very shortduration of leaflessness. The Tabor oakincludes two subspecies, Quercus ithaburettsissubsp. macrolepis (Kotschy) Hedge & Yalt.and Quercus ithaburensis Decne. subsp.ithaburensis (Govaerts & Frodin, 1998). Thesubspecies macrolepis (fig. 1) grow in Italy inthe Salentina peninsula (Pignatti, 1982;Zangheri, 1976), in Southern Greece (Strid &Tan, 1997), in Crete (Chilton & Turland, 1997),and in several Aegean Islands (Economidou,1981; Davis, 1982), in Western andSouthwestern Anatolya, (Turkey) (mal, 1955,1959; Akman et al., 1978, 1979; Davis, 1982).The second subspecies of the Tabor Oak,Quercus ithaburensis subsp. ithaburensis (fig.1) is found mainly in Israel: It extents in theSharon plain, north of Tel-Aviv, thennorthwards through the Ramot-Menashe area,238	 Acta Botanica Malacitana 27. 200242 43 44 45 46 47 48 49 tr11 51 52 53 54 55 56 57Figure 1. The subsepcies ithaburensis is alsofound in the northwestern part of the Gileadregion in the Mediterranean part of Jordan(Zohary, 1962, 1973; Quézel & Barbéro, 1985).The presence of Tabor Oak in Lebanon and inSyria is very unlikely as the different workscarried out on the vegetation of these countriesmade no mention of either of these subspecies(Chouchani et al., 1975; Abi-Saleh eta!., 1976;Barbéro et al., 1976; Chalabi, 1982; Nahal,1982, 1983, 1984). The presence of isolatedindividuals identified as Tabor Oak by Post(1933) and later by Mouterde (1966) in thecoastal area of Syria remains unclear and thesespecimen may have been introduced foragriculture purposes as in other Mediterraneanregions (Turland et al., 1993). As aconsequence, the extent of the subspeciesithaburensis seems to be restricted mainly toIsrael and to specific locations in easternadjacent regions.Surprinsingly, the basic morphologicaldifferences between the two subspecies are notwell established. Zohary (1973) mentions thatthe two subspecies are «very similar in theirecology» but this author did not develop anyfurther comparative description of the twosubspecies. Davis (1982) notes briefly that«Quercus ithaburensis subsp. ithaburensis onlydiffers from the more northern subspecies[subsp. tnacrolepis] in the less deeply incisedleaf margins». Moreover, Zohary (1973) andDavis (1982) both insisted that Tabor Oaksubspecies show a great variability in leafshape. As a consequence, one might concludethat both subspecies are very similar. The purposeof this paper is to display and quantify thesedifferences.A total of 120 samples of Tabor Oak acornsinserted into their cupule were collected in lateSeptember from various areas in WesternAnatolya and in the Ramot-Menashe regionsoutheast to the Carmel area. The sampleswere collected from the trees simultaneouslyin Turkey and in Israel, with the most matureacorns being selected. Since Zoharydistinguished five varieties in the subspeciesithaburensis (Zohary, 1966) it should bestressed that all the samples collected in Israelhave been taken from specimens belonging tothe variety ithaburensis which is the mostwidespread according to Zohary'snomenclature (1966).In order to compare the majormorphological divergences between the twosubspecies five parameters were chosen: (1)The length of the structure composed by theacorn inserted in the cup-shape cupule; (2) thediameter of the cupule; (3) the length of theacorn which is not enclosed by the cupule; (4)the length and (5) the width of the scales whichare covering the outside surface of the cupule.The first three measurements were carried outwith a digital calippers.The total length of the structure composedby the acorn inserted into the cupule was foundto be slightly longer for the subspeciesithaburensis (48 mm, Sd: 6.5 mm) than for thesubspecies niacrolepis (44 mm, Sd: 6.3 mm)(fig. 2). As shown in Table 1, these results areconsistent with those mentioned by Camus(1938); the main nuance is in the length of theacorn of the subspecies macrolepis which hasbeen reported by Camus (1938) as quite smaller.However, the values of the standard deviation(Sd) suggest that the difference in the acornlength of the two subspecies is not prominentenough to be considered a reliable criterion fordifferentiating between the two subspecies.In contrast, the cupule diameter showsvery significant morphological differencesbetween the two subspecies of the Tabor Oak(fig. 2). The subspecies macrolepis developscupules whose average diameter reaches 52mm (Sd: 7.3 mm) whereas the average cupulediameter of the subspecies ithaburensis doesnot exceed 34 mm (Sd: 5 mm). Values aregiven in millimeter.(1938) (tab. 1). Consequently, the value of theratio of the length of the structure formed bythe acorn and the cupule (previously measured)and the cupule diameter, reveals a greatdifference between both subspecies: This ratioreaches only 0.8 for the subspecies macrolepiswhereas it reaches up to 1.4 for the subspeciesithaburensis. These values actually reflect thegeneral aspect of the structure formed by theassociation of the cupule and the acorn. In theithaburensis subspecies this structure is oblong,whereas the macrolepis subspecies develop arather globose structure.Similarly, the length of the acorn which isnot enclosed by the cupule constitutes a secondreliable criterion for the differentitationbetween the two Tabor Oak subspecies (figs. 1and 2). The length of the acorn sectionuncovered is almost two and half times longerin ithaburensis subspecies (28 mm, Sd: 4.8mm) than in macrolepis subspecies (12 mm,Sd: 1.9 mm). One should mention that Zohary(1966) distinguished a variety subinclusa ofQuercus ithaburensis subsp. ithaburensis,characterized, as «an acorn enclosed in thecupule by 2/3 or more of its length». However,this variety is represented by a very smallpopulation whose extent is restricted to theDan valley, north of the Tiberias lake.Finally, the length and the width of thescales which are covering the external surfaceof the cupule, can he considered as the thirdsignificant morphological criterion accordingto which both subspecies may be easilydistinguished (fig. 2). The scales of Quercusithaburensis subsp. tnacrolepis have been foundto be 19 mm long and 5 mm wide whereas thoseof Quercus ithaburensis subsp. ithaburensisare significantly smaller as they do not exceed9 mm in length and only 2 mm in width.Surprinsingly, the values reported by Camus(1938) concerning the length and the width ofthe scales of the subspecies ithaburensis aresignificantly higher than those found in thisstudy (tab. 1). This difference may suggest thatthe size of the scales might not be as reliable asthe two previous morphological criteria in orderto differentiate the Tabor oak subspecies.A comparison of the most basicmorphological characteristics of the acorn andthe cupule of both Tabor Oak subspecieshighlights the existence of three majormorphological differences:I. The cupule diameter of the subspeciesmacrolepis is 1.5 times larger than that of thesubspecies ithaburensis. As a consequence,the general aspect of the structure formed bythe acorn and the cupulc is globose inmacrolepis subspecies while it is distinctlyoblong in ithaburensis subspecies.2. The part of the acorn which is notcovered by the cupule is 2.3 times longer inithaburensis subspecies than in macrolepissubspecies.3. Scales are 2.1 times longer and 2.5Acta Botanica Malacitana 27. 2002 	 241times wider on Quercus ithaburensis subsp.macrolepis specimens than they are on Quercusithaburensis subsp. ithaburensis.These results suggest that acorn and cupulebasic morphological traits constitute simpleand reliable distinction criteria that enable todifferentiate accurately between bothsubspecies of the Tabor Oak. As a consequence,it is preferable to distinguish between the twosubspecies according to the morphology of theacorn and the cupule rather than according tothe highly variable shape of the leaf.AKNOWLEDGMENTS.
